I've been playing for a while. I may have 30 games under my belt and I am intrigued by the famed Riku's West Germany opening. I haven't seen a detailed description of its benefits and how it is played and would appreciate it if someone were to illuminate all of us.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Dan and Conor.

I do have a couple concerns. Giving up WGer leaves me very vulnerable to Suez, socialist govs, and DeGaulle. Before attempting this approach, shouldn't I be sure to have at least one of those in my starting hand?

Moreover, the Sovs need not put 4 into WGer to threaten France, only 1. At that point then he has the option with DeGaulle, SocGov, and Suez either to reduce the influence I have there or simply use the ops to control France.

Is the endgame of this strategy one where I end up controlling Italy and a bunch of non-battlegrounds? It seems tenuous even if I control a couple of Italy's neighbours and over control to 5. BTW, in overcontrolling to 5, am I not reducing, somewhat, the benefit of not having to invest in WGer?

I'd quite like to see Socialist Governments in my hand before attempting this setup, usually. I wouldn't worry about Suez or DeGaulle as if the USSR plays aggresively in Europe you're probably not going to be able to keep France either.

This means you have to hold Italy and get Spain and Greece to guard against realignments if DEFCON ever gets back to 5, also protects against Brush War. Interestingly, NATO's importance as an event is magnified as you would like the coup/Brush War protection, and Special Relationship will be useful with NATO in effect to disrupt France or W Germany and force the USSR to reassert control.

The USSR can threaten France by putting 1 ip in W Germany even if you control, it's only costing them 1 less op this way so that would not be a concern to me. The important thing to remember in TS is balance - if USSR is ploughing ops into France and W Germany, he's not putting them in Asia or Middle East, so you can, and balance him out. That's what you want as US at the start, just get through the Early War and keep the score to -6 or so going into Turn 4, and you're doing fine.
