I haven't posted much because of time constraints, so I thought I would give a quick update. The Close Encounters expansion comes with a 55 card deck. In our deck we have:

25 Racial Advantage Cards (yes, 25!) - These are all fairly unique and fairly balanced (we hope ). In some cases where the Racial Advantage was very strong, it was given a corresponding weakness to balance it out. Each of these have significant impact to the game without changing it up entirely. They are very different and I find myself wanting to play all of them. You get dealt two of these at the start of the game and choose one. We have also added scenarios for team play where in a 2v1 game or a 3v1 game all the players are equal economically, but the player on his own gets a handful of racial advantages. These scenarios are not completely balanced yet.

30 Alien Technology Cards - When you conquer a non-player alien planet, you get to draw two of these and keep one. Unlike Racial Advantage cards, these do not normally impact your entire empire, but (usually) give an advantage to particular classes of ships. I like the way that this rewards aggressive, conquering play. It also opens up possibilities of getting synergy between these and other Alien cards or your Racial Advantage. It is just so cool to be able to draw cards after conquering a planet! cool

We are still tweaking some of these cards so I don't want to reveal the specifics yet. Give us another month or two and maybe we will start posting them.

There are so many other awesome things in the box - and we keep coming up with even more ideas - that the hardest part will getting everything tested well enough. Everything is modular so, for those who only want to add a few things to their game, they will be able to pick and choose. The fact that the base game is so modular has made working on the expansion very easy. It is like working on an old timey car with a carburetor as opposed to trying to work on a car with computers, fuel injections, etc.

- More of the various types of ships to accommodate a crew experience system.
- Titans
- Boarding ships
- Transports
- Infantry, Heavy Infantry, Space Marines, and Grav Armor to support the ground combat portion of the game
- Amoebas to battle in both the solitaire game and non-solitaire scenarios
- Fleet markers for those who would like to use the fleet display

A few other cool things that I am not ready to reveal yet..... ninjagoo

Thanks Jim!!!

I look forward to the expansion!

Would it be possible to push GMT for a bigger box, so it would be possible to put the base game (plus counter trays or small bead boxes) together with the expansion in the same box? My current box is filled to the brim.

What do others think? It might drive the price up a little, but for me, transporting the game would be easier.

I have yet to play my first game but I must admit that after reading the rules the game seems very solid and I already preordered my copy of the expansion. I agree with raymonkey, a box where both the base game and expansion fits would be great. I have the second printing with the mounted board so even with all the chits in small ziplocs my box is already full.

thanks for the update, the cards sound very cool

Are we talking a scenario akin to that grand ole game of my childhood Amoeba Wars? That was a fun ole space game.

Looking forward to seeing how the ground combat works out and really appreciate the fleet markers!

I can't wait, totally excited

Did you make the main tech path cheaper compared to the alternatives, or will DNs remain in the domain of those longer games that rarely happen with more than two players?

Yes, we tweaked a couple of the tech costs by just a little - more on that later. In addition we added a little more money into the game to accommodate the larger tech tree.

After DNs come Titans...yes, they can destroy planets.
