Official Rules for the GEEK MADNESS BRACKET CHALLENGE

This year, alongside the annual Geek Madness Tournament, you can play along at home and win GeekGold!

d10-1 Download an official 2012 Bracket in MS Excel here; -OR- 2015 Geek Madness Blank Bracket; -OR- GeekMail me with your email address and I will send you a PDF of the Bracket.

d10-2 Select a winner for each pairing. Insert the name of the game on the next open slot and continue until you have selected the Champion. Once completed, you should have selected a total of 63 games to advance. More info about past Tournaments can be found here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Geek_Madness

d10-3 Transfer 1 to the dummy user Geek Madness (in the next post)

d10-4 Return your completed sheet to the email address on the form or GeekMail Geek Madness to receive my email address. Forms are due by NOON Geek (Central) Time on Saturday, March 10, 2012. (Note that the bracket voting will have started and progressed along for approximately a day.)

Players are limited to two (2) sheets per Username (one for you and one for your significant other -or- two for you with different selections). Write your username and "sheet" or real name on the Bracket to distinguish them. It still costs 1 per sheet.

d10-5 Correct picks in each round will be awarded points as follows:

1st Round 1 point
2nd Round 2 points
3rd Round 3 points
Quarter-Finals 4 points
Semi-Finals 5 points
Championship 6 points

d10-6 Highest Point Total for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd get the following payouts:

1st 55% of pot
2nd 30% of pot
3rd 15% of pot

d10-7 Ties: In the event of tied points on the sheets, the first tie-breaker goes to the person closest to the projected number of votes for both games in the Championship round. (So if you think Team A will collect 345 votes and Team B will collect 305 votes, your guess would be 650.)

If still tied, the second tie-breaker goes to the player with the most correct slots. If still tied, all tied players will share the pot of that place level and the place level(s) below them. In other words, if 2 players remain tied for first, they will each receive 50% of the pot for 1st and 2nd place; 3rd place is awarded as normal.

If 3 or more players tie for 1st, then they each receive an equal share of the entire pot and no further winners will be determined.

d10-8 Schedule: End dates are as follows but subject to change:

1st Round Thursday, March 15 (~7 days)
2nd Round Wednesday, March 21 (~6 days)
3rd Round Monday, March 26 (~5 days)
Quarter-Finals Friday, March 30 (~4 days)
Semi-Finals Wednesday, April 4 (~5 days)
Championship Monday, April 9 (~5 days)

d10-9 Any additional questions, please ask here.

Ranks were locked in based on the BGG database of March 7, 2012. It was determined to combine games of similar design to free up room within the bracket. For games that were combined, the higher of the two slots was retained. Lower slots were shifted up to create more slots at the bottom. In addition, only the Top 60 games were taken, leaving 4 additional slots open at the bottom.

Open nominations were held and the games receiving the most votes filled in the vacant slots, seeded by current rank. Games with a "/" or "(& info)" represent combined games. Games with an "*" represent nominated games.

This preliminary round can be found here: Official 2012 Geek Madness Tournament: Preliminary Round - CLOSED

The spreadsheet isn't working for me. Having selected the first two rounds, the third round only shows one of the two games to select from.

This seems incredibly rough for the top seeds.

TS gets Acquire
Agricola gets Carcassone
Puerto Rico gets Catan

Maybe this just indicates that Geek Rankings are not so great at figuring out good seeds.

I see it as the opposite. The nominations have it rough as they are going up against the top seeds. Personally, I only think Catan has the chance for an upset, but given the anniversary edition buzz, even doubt that will happen.

Contest will kick off on Friday at some point. It will be a geeklist with 2 games paired up. Vote by thumbing the game you like. Most votes continues to the next round.

This is just the "game before the game" where you can predict the winners and see how well you do.

Saturday the 10th. If the sheets say the 12th, it is an artifact from last year's form that didn't get updated.

That's true, but it's weird to think that in some ways you'd rather be seeded #9 than #8. Certainly if the seeds could "choose" their opponents, they would not pick Acquire/Carcassone/Catan.

If you are sending an Open Office file, you may get a bounce back from my email. Not sure why but have gotten two complaints so far. If you can covert it to an Excel file, that would be helpful or you can geekmail me for an alternate address.

Or maybe it is just certain international emails..... Germany and Brazil have bounced.

Yes. In the red instructions at the bottom of the page, the email is the very last line.

Last entry received at 11:53 so no more will be accepted. What I do need to know is for those who paid but did not enter, do you want a refund or are you contributing to the general pot?

We have friends over now so I can't do anything but will be creating the geeklist later tonight or tomorrow of all the predictions.
