I'm really bummed out about this.

He altered my perception of what art is and ultimately the way I saw the world. I was working at a comic book store when Epic started releasing all his trades. His Silver Surfer changed the concept of what a superhero comic was supposed to be like for me. My experience from it was far more affecting than Watchmen, Dark Knight or Sandman (although Shade the Changing Man and Doom Patrol came close). His Blueberry stuff was masterful and was horribly misrepresented in the movie (which is strange as Lt. Blueberry would have been a perfect Leone film).

I always had fantasies that I would work with him some day. I'm sad that they didn't become a reality.

He will be missed.

Indeed. He had a wonderful, unique eye, and his feel changed how I looked at comics (and art more widely) too. RIP.

cry I still have my old Heavy Metal mags which feature a lot of his stuff. The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius is a particular favorite of mine, given my pulp proclivities. A terrible loss.
Many of you have seen his work and may not have known it, since he was partly responsible for some of the production design on many sci-fi films such as Alien, Tron, and The Fifth Element. cry

I learned of Giraud's passing from one of the many comic blogs I visit.
Very sad news indeed!
Heavy Metal's collection, 'Is Man Good?' was my first introduction to his work. It had a huge impact on my young mind.

There is an excellent documentary in three parts, In Search of Moebius, posted on Dailymotion.
There's a point in his life detailed when Giraud's mother remarries a Mexican man. Jean visits Mexico. Watch it and you'll agree or have an ah-ha! moment to see how the landscape had an immense affect on his work. Very insightful.

He was also the HR GIGER overshadowed OTHER artist from Alien. He designed all of the human tech like the Space suits and the ships.

Shit.

I remember finding my father's collection of early Métal Hurlant issues when I was a kid (Moebius was one of the founding members of the magazine), and I was blown away by his work. He was a great artist and also a passionate defender of the graphic novel genre, which is not easy in this country of elitist intellectual tight-arses.

bummed out indeed.
