2012-03-09 - Friday night, after things wound down, I got in a game of Dominion with my wife.
Dominion

2012-03-10 - I was supposed to go play TI3 with some good friends, but because I didn't get out of work until late. So instead a couple local friends came over and we played:
Small World
Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre
Dominion
Eminent Domain
Unpublished Prototype - My survival game. I think it's getting a re-theme after some brainstorming after our session.

I finally got around to trying out my copy of 7 Wonders on Saturday! What a great game! We played it twice. Then we played a game of Kingsburg... then I was out of time and went home. The end.

Two games of War of the Ring
Two games of Flashpoint: Fire Rescue
One game of Attika

It turns out that after teaching him and playing his first game 2 weeks ago, my opponent has fallen in love with War of the Ring and bought his own copy so he was very happy to get in two more plays yesterday. We need to look into scheduling an online match sometime with the dedicated client software for this game.

Flashpoint yielded two losses. The house collapsed in the first game, and in the second we lost four victims. Odd, usually I win more than 50% of games at that level but some bad rolls can turn things sour quickly.

We had a 4p for Attika which is rare (almost all my plays have been 2p). After all possible temple connections were blocked, it was basically between me (Thebes) and the guy playing Athens seated after me. Corinth wasn't doing too badly but hadn't managed to get as much space as us. Sparta had gotten wedged into a tiny corner of the board and as it turns out was trying to save a lot of cards for a temple win that wasn't going to be possible - he had misunderstood what "building for free" meant in the rules explanation so that was unfortunate. I made my big push at the end, unexpected to them because as new players it's not obvious how multiple amphoras can allow you to finish more buildings in a turn than one might expect, and had only one building left on my mat so I pointed out to everyone that I expected to win next turn and I showed them the four locations I could build my last building for free. They took it on themselves to see if they could stop me, and between them blocked all four spots. All this did was delay me a turn though, I drew 3 cards and then could put the building in quite a lot of places that matched at least one of the 3 resources on the building tile.

We played Ora & Labora on Friday. What an awesome game! IMHO it makes Agricola and Le Havre redundant.

We tried out Flash Point: Fire Rescue, and even the Family version kicked our butts. The house collapsed on us. Twice. We had to wonder whether we were interpreting the rules correctly, as they clearly stated, "Try not to let the building fall on you."

I drove 3 hours* to my childhood home of Maryland to pick up a bottle of scotch that I had been hunting for years in my current locale without success (Glenfiddich 21 Gran Reserva, fwiw). I met up with some friends and spent most of Saturday teaching them 7 Wonders and Small World**. As the party grew in size, we took a break from gaming, enjoyed some adult beverages and then as the party died down again, as parties are wont to do, we broke out the games again. A few rounds of The Resistance was the cherry on the top of a fantastic evening***.

*Yes, I drove 3 hours for a bottle of scotch. This went over about as well as one would expect with the girlfriend.

**My go-to games. Easy to pick up and play. On other trips to see this group I've taken Pandemic and Ascension, which also went over quite well.

***My girlfriend is now officially burnt out on The Resistance. I need a new game that is quick to setup and play for large groups.

In addition to Colonia, Caylus, Alien Frontiers, Botswana and Mage Knight the board game, I got to play a new game 3 times:

This new game is VERY FUN! But destined to piss many people off:

1. It is D&D themed, but it is clearly a cube-pushing Eurogame

2. It is a cube-pushing Eurogame, but it is clearly D&D themed with screw-you "Intrigue" cards.

I laughed and had more fun playing Lords of Waterdeep than any other game this weekend.

Saturday I had 6 people over.

The first couple arrived and the 3 of us played two rounds of Hey, That's My Fish! which they enjoyed quite a bit.

When the rest of the players showed up, we played Betrayal at House on the Hill and had a pretty tight game which the players were able to win vs the haunt and a fight to the finish.

Finally, we had a 6 person single lap race of Formula D using my Valencia track for the first time. I really enjoyed this track a lot as it had a lot of really nice tight turns in it and good gear management was definitely a must for this track.

Dominion with cards from the base set as well as Dominion: Intrigue, Dominion: Prosperity, Dominion: Hinterlands, Dominion: Cornucopia.

Feudality - Not a "real" game . . . just a first-time walkthrough to learn the rules.

Friday:

Heroscape, we are fairly new to this game, but we are really enjoying it. I only own the RotV set plus Orm's Return. Wife and I played the Winter Holdout scenario which I found extremely fun, and I lost.

Saturday:

Crokinole, played half a dozen matches or so. We absolutely love this game and play it 3-4 nights a week.

Sunday:

Memoir '44, we played our first game of this with the recommended first scenario. I played the Allies and won, we didn't have time to swap sides, we'll probably do that this week sometime. Very fun game though.

Himalaya. SO underrated.

And three more tests of the new map for our 99%-finished prototype. Removed a square foot from the map, and hey look at that, it shortened the game to 15-20min/player once the rules are down.

We also determined that new players can remove one of the three checkpoints and have a similar game-length experience while they learn the interactions of the game's variables, which means I think we're finished with the in-house playtests.

I notice that a lot of losses can be attributed to not paying enough attention to the fire and spending too much time early in the game on victims. Then by the time you get back to the fire it's gotten too well established and you can't make progress fast enough.

Next play, get the fire under control first, THEN go for the victims while some people continue fighting the fire.

When you move up to start using the roles, avoid too many of the "support" roles - the Paramedic and Rescue Specialist. One of those in a group of four players is OK. I wouldn't do more than that. Good roles for newer players include I think the Generalist, Fire Captain, CAFS, Hazmat, and Imaging Technician in roughly that order. You may want to start someone as the Driver/Operator *IF* the starting fires are concentrated mostly around a single quadrant. Otherwise, maybe consider having someone switch to him later if the fire is getting out of control.

Played Gears of War: The Board Game had a win by the skin of our teeth. Finished with only one man standing the others were bleeding out.

& Played Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game, 1st time playing it. It doesn't look like it's going to be on my favorites list, but we still had fun.
