I'm gathering ideas on how to make one.

All suggestions welcome - unless you advise using a high-energy particle accelerator!

3-D, hmm... maybe try painting an accretion disk (which is the part you'd be able to see) on a clear plastic disk, and mount it on a flying base or something so it's above the board? If you wanted to be ambitious, you could have the mounting post run through the top side of the thing and paint the post (or use blue acrylic rod, or something) to represent the radiation jets?

I would suggest using several overlapping layers of plastic card/foam sheet, probably ring shaped and decreasing in size, three would probably be enough for the effect.

The advantage of this is you cant paint each layer differently such as receding color or chew away at the rings to give them real texture.

you could do this several ways so you could go for an Eye of Terror effect or whatever..

Dont know if your seeing the same thing as me but in my head it looks brilliant !!

Whatever you do, make sure to post pics! I literally just started getting my BFG stuff together (accrued over several years from eBay, store closeouts, etc) this week, and scenery is one thing I was wondering about. I bought a ton of foam spheres for moons and planets, but hadn't got more ambitious than that. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do!

No made a star/ jump gate though.
Polymorth might be a good material if you want a 3d ie standup black hole.
It is paintable light weight and re useable.
Alternately styrene. Or sheet loft insulation is light very workable and paintable if you sculpting skills are quite good. Also paintable with and undercoat.
It is a little fragile though but I assume it will be a good size maybe 10 to 12 inches?.

Or of course drill a bloody great hole in your gaming table.
He he juut kidding.

Each time I swear off new GW stuff, they come up with stuff like this that is perfect for their older games. I'm pretty much guaranteed to buy this for BFG.

It's a vortex grenade template from Games Workshop

Industrious types have been known to make one by cutting a ball in half and painting it.

A black hole should be black, shouldn't it?

Not if it is actively feeding. And even if it isn't actively feeding it still radiates, albeit not in the visible spectrum.
