Or, to ask a more direct question, what gave birth to Avalon Hill? When did someone sit in a desk and thought, I'm going to design a game and not just make a small tweak to snake and laders?

All my knowledge about gaming history starts in the 1980s, and it all pops up out of nowhere in my mind. Where can I read about this?

It was a printing company with some free press time.

aside from the fact that minature wargaming to recreate battles both current, civil war, and ancient, roman were in the victorian era, though not the rules and tables we have now days, and Chess is definetly a battle and is thousands of years old.

but other than that he is definetly the one that took those victorian era minatures battles and formalized them making them accessable to everyone and CHEAPER since he took them and removed the hundreds of lead statues that were used on huge boards that faithfully recreated battle areas for generals and other startegical entities to study.

The List Early games with an "Author / Designer" has only a couple of entries. H.G. Wells` Little Wars from 1913 is another one I will put onto it.
For the first ideas to use miniatures or more "abstract", but still simulating war gaming, just type kriegsspiel into the game search and look for a whole bunch of games starting in the 18th century ...

The printing company only took it over after the original company wasn't able to pay its bills.
