I do not deny I love Heroscape. With a passion.

I own all of the game expansions, have created custom pieces, and beat the drum all the time as to how great the game is. As a lover of plastic, it doesn't get better than this (the ENTIRE game is plastic!), and in one way or the other Heroscape has given me many, many hours of pleasure.

A few weeks ago I was thinking about what might have been it Heroscape had survived another year or so, and what the next expansion would have been (before DnD was incorporated into the game system, that is.)

I figured that since the game covered the various landscapes of the earth, it is only logical the next one would have featured a particular landscape as well.

The first Master Set covered the average temperate zones on the planet, which was by far the most logical thing to start with. Some grass, some rock, some sand. Makes perfect sense.

The following expansions covered volcanoes, swamps, the arctic, and jungles. That pretty much covered the planet, yes?

No.

We never were treated to a desert expansion, and that is sad. I am sure it would have been great! Just imagine how nice the set would have been, with sand tiles, rocks, and various arid fauna.

Well, imagine no more. Using my vast collection of Heroscape, I created what I think Hasbro would have done if they had continued the line for another year or so. I even kept in mind they would want to rehash earlier units and terrain to save money (after all, sales were beginning to suffer, and the Ticalla jungle set just barely made it into production.)

OK, the name would have been something like "The Sands of Ullar", for reasons that will soon be obvious, and the following pieces would have been included in the next big expansion (and is was going to be the biggest yet, as expansions go, in an effort to kickstart the game back into high gear.)

The main piece of terrain would be all new, and quite the bit of eye candy. A tall butte built on an 11 hex tile.

To further add to the landscape, recycled 3 hex rock outcrops would have been added.

For a bit more rock coverage, some 1 hex outcrops would have been included.

To add a bit of new plant life, they would have introduced us to the new Marro Razor Grass (one of my own ideas, thank you very much), which impedes travel by almost any unit made of flesh. Only metal skinned or robotic units can move through it unharmed.

The expansion would need new units, and since the Onyx Vipers had gone over so well, Hasbro would have decided to do some more Viper repaints- this time in a brown paint scheme. The Sand Vipers are just like their green cousins, except they get better defense in sand and must stop when entering water.

Of course, they would have done a repaint of the Viper Warlord as well...

Here is what the final collection of bits would have looked like. As always, some rock tiles would have been tossed in for variety.

How would the game have looked once set up and in action? Here is one scenario I call "Last Stand At Lone Rock", where I tossed in a few robots from the first master set.

In conclusion, it is a shame Heroscape passed on before the final obvious terrain set could have been released. But I am sure there will be more than one Heroscaper out there who will decide to do what I did, and get some sand between their toes!

For what it's worth, one of the first samples shown when the game was handed over to WotC (long before the news of the transition to DnD) was of a possible desert terrain pack. See the link below:

Heroscapers News Blog, January 25th, 2008

Albeit, this set was really lackluster in the eyes of fans, though WotC was trying their best to offer new product within the confines of what was an apparently very limited budget for Heroscape production.

That said, your set looks great! Especially those Vipers!

Thanks gents.

I have to admit that I have been planning to submit this little article for a few weeks, but just today I got off my butt and did it.

I realize the Vipers are not one of the most powerful units available, but I got the idea of repainting some for this imaginary expansion while riding my bicycle, and that sealed my desert expansion idea. I rushed home and bought all the Vipers Miniature Market had, and repainted them the day they arrived in the mail.

All in all, I feel the Sand Vipers really pull this make-believe expansion together, giving it a "real" product feel.

Y'know, it could be I saw that very thing years ago and buried it mentally due to the rather boring look of the proposed terrain expansion!

Funny how the mind works...

Hi again,

thanks for the reply.

For each unit and single hero I use specific cards.

This makes the handling of whole forces rather simple.

A typical melee.

Thaelenk Tundra and Vipers... hmmmm.

Maybe some repainted Venoc Vipers, painted a nice snow-camo white?

Ask and ye shall receive...

And remember, Hasbro owns all copyrights to unaltered Heroscape stuff.

By the way, I see you are a Lovecraft fan (as am I). For what it is worth, I always felt Ullar was a relation to Cthulhu. Just take a look at his symbol on the cards...

Aye, most deserts are.

That's why the Sand Vipers huddle around the rocks at night to absorb any stored radiant heat to keep their bodies warm!
