I'm looking for suggestions for suitable background music for playing fantasy games.

I have the Howard Shore Lord of the Rings soundtrack, but it's been over-used because I play so many Tolkien games!

Talisman Island put me on to Dronolan's Tower:

http://www.talismanisland.com/day_music.htm

http://www.dronolan.com/

I've also considered getting some Gregorian chants.

Any other suggestions?

I'm not interested in supporting music piracy, so keep it legal. arrrh

Oh, and before anyone beats me to it:

[Moss] Does this sound mysterious?

[Jen] Yeah, yeah it does.

[Moss] I was hoping for ruddy mysterious.

Fantasy videogame soundtracks work; like the 4-disc edition of the Skyrim soundtrack by Jeremy Soule, or just about any Japanese RPG soundtrack.

The Skyrim soundtrack purchase page:

http://www.directsong.com/mobile/productdetails.php?producti...

You can listen to most of it here, to decide if it's worthy of pursuing for purchase:

(defaulting starting point to a favorite track of mine)

If you can find it, the themes to Baldur's Gate 1+2 on the PC are excellent.

Our favorites are many of the soundtracks done by Tangerine Dream like Legend, but all their music lends well to playing Fantasy games IMO.

Carmina Burana by Orff
Ninth Symphony (from the New World) by Dvořák
Any Symphony by Mahler, Bruckner or Shoshtakovich (but especially the 11th)
Ring Opera's (or just the symphonic versions) by Wagner
any tone poem by R. Strauss
The Planets by Holst

Chants should work too, but will be less "epic". If you want songs, try stuff by the Medieval Babes.

also check out music by Bartok, Stravinsky, and others from the late Romatic/early 20th Century era.

The soundtrack to Army of Darkness.

Also maybe I "unrecommend"--what would be the word for that?--Gregorian chant. It's is for worship. It's good if you want something mysterious or good vs. evil, but not ruddy mysterious if you know what I mean.

You can also try www.radiorivendell.com, it's an online radio that only plays fantasy music.

+1 for carmina bruana. for those of us from that time frame, think sound track from excaliber. Still one of the best theme music for fantasy.

i also have a tendency to put in nut cracker suite, gizelle, sleeping beauty, and romeo and juliette ballets. this music is so familiarly associated with fantasy themes, just having watched some of the disney movies will call up that feeling.

Ring cycle for sure, Everyone knows the ride of the valkyries.

What about Nox Arcana's 2006 album "Blood of the Dragon"?

By the way, Nox Arcana can be used as a soundtrack for almost any kind of game.

Not enough room here to list all the stuff i use when GM-ing. I have many themed playlists, but in general:

Composers-
Alan Silvestri: Van Helsing, Predator 2, Beowulf
Bear McCreary: Battlestar Galactica (newer) tv series
Basil Poledouris: Conan the Barbarian & Starship Troopers
Danny Elfman: Fable, Planet of the Apes, Batman, Men In Black, Sleepy Hollow.
Gerard Marino: God of War
Hans Zimmer: Pirates of the C, King Arthur, Crimson Tide, Batman (newer), Muppet Treasure Island, Gladiator.
James Horner: Avatar, Aliens, Troy, Titanic, Mask of Zorro
John Williams: (pick any)
Tommy Tellarico's "Advent Rising" soundtrack is unforgettable!

Artists/"Bands"-
E.S. Posthumous ! (esp Unearthed, feat "Pompei" and "Menouthis"!)
Corner Stone Cues (esp "Requiem for a Tower")

Look for variety/collections, too: Warriors of the Silver Screen, The Great Fantasy Adventure Album, The Ultimate Movie Music Collection, etc

I could go on. and on. and on.

I listen to the Elder Scrolls: Oblivian soundtrack all the time while gaming. I like it better than the Skyrim soundtrack, but they are both good choices.

There are some awesome orchestral movie and videogame soundtracks out there for fantasy and historical sorts of settings. Conan the Barbarian and Gladiator have been named, and all three of Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings soundtracks seem obvious, but what about

Willow
The Dark Crystal
The Lord of the Rings (Ralph Bakshi movie from the 70's)
Braveheart
Last of the Mohicans
Legend
Age of Conan
Neverending Story
13th Warrior
Dragonslayer
Rob Roy
Game of Thrones

Say, do they sell CDs of their music or only MP3s and such?
