HI all,
(I know this has already been done to death...but...)

Currently looking for a good two player game that I can play with my wife. preferably a two player only type game as the mechanics of games that handle more seem dont always seem to work as well in a 2p run.

We have tried Twilight Struggle several times and my wife get really frustrated with it (esp with a handful of bad cards). I would like to love it more as i think it can be great but unfortunately my experinces with it have not helped in that regards. I am always on the lookout for something that we can play easliy together and have a good time over - rather than one person feeling doninated/owned by the other all game...
we enjoy both card and boardgames.

Games that my wife likes:
Pandemic
Ascension
Cattan
Carcassone (we both enjoy this most of the time, but ccnstantly playing it can get a bit tiresome.)
7 wonders
tanto curore
Citadels

Games that I enjoy:
Twilight imperium
Pandemic
Ascension
7 wonders
tanto curore
Cold war: CIA vs KGB
Citadels.

suggestions people?
thanks!!

I think that Stone Age is an excellent game with 2, although it plays up to 4 well.

Finca is a great 2 player game. Easy to learn and takes around 45 min to play. it's also on a similar "level" to the games you say your partner enjoys.

Innovation is fun. Don't let the sparse artwork scare you off.

Stone Age felt to simple for my wife. But she really enjoyed Homesteaders and Ora et Labora.

Pure two player games that my girlfriend and I enjoy a lot include:
Yinsh
Jambo
Jaipur
Dragonheart
and recently Summoner Wars and Memoir '44

Most of these are kind of on the lighter side, especially Dragonheart.

Multiplayer games we love that work great with two players include:
Agricola
Puerto Rico
Pantheon
The Castles of Burgundy
Saint Petersburg
San Juan

One of our favourite games to play 2P is Amyitis. It's a euro but highly interactive and so in 2P is pretty vicious; constant opportunities to really screw the other player. I accept no responsibility if it leads to arguments or frosty silences.

mostly agree, I find ticket to ride tedious. spend like 5 turns saving up and then 1 turn building...repeat.

For 2 players I really like Hive. No bad hands, no dominating and just fun.

(Also I wrote this review: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/787067/a-review-hive-expansi... )

Edit: +1 also for Jambo, but I'd get the first expansion to go with it. That one gives you another victory condition, which makes it easier to deal with bad hands of cards.

Also, if you like Carcassonne, see if you can find Fjords anywhere. It's a little lighter, but still fun. Could be a nice variation now and again.

My standard reply to this is always Eminent Domain. It is great two player. You also have the bonus of it being quite fun at other numbers and it plays a little differently at those numbers too. I think if you like Twilight Emperium this will be good as it is supposed to be a card game that plays a bit like it. It is also a deck builder which you like. Honestly I have yet to introduce it to someone that has disliked it and most gamers ask for another. I know my partner did and that is a rare occurrence.

I could be wrong, but some of the suggestions above look like they were given without any consideration of the games your wife enjoys and the games you enjoy! As a huge fan of 2p games, I humbly suggest the following:

Lost Cities (#1 recommendation from me)
Forbidden Island
Lord of the Rings: The Duel
Carcassonne: The Castle (a 2p-only twist on a game you already like; seriously, take a look, it's different)
Lord of the Rings (a classic co-op, & my favorite game)
Kingdoms or Beowulf: The Movie Board Game (Beowulf is a new take on Kingdoms; both are great tile-layers from Dr. Knizia)
Odin's Ravens
Haggis
Dragonheart
The Hobbit (you journey together, but it's competitive)

For us Battle Line has been more enjoyable than Lost Cities.
Other two player card games we enjoy: Jaipur, Jambo and Rivals for Catan.

If you find Twilight Struggle a bit much, try 1960: the Making of the President.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game: we've been having fun with this 2-player co-op
Lords of Waterdeep: plays up to 5, but it scales very well and is excellent with 2
+1 The Castles of Burgundy: scales to 4, but very good with 2
+1 Dragonheart: nice, light 2-player game

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned earlier!
If you want to go cheaper, you can consider Keltis: Das Kartenspiel: it plays up to 4 but it's basically Lost Cities with 2 (you can actually play it exactly as Lost Cities with a very little tweak). The artwork is somewhat less interesting and the cards are smaller, but it costs a fraction of LC and comes in a ridiculously small box (and supports more players just in case).

Other 2p-exclusive games I've been looking into lately (besides Summoner Wars) are Omen: A Reign of War and Hemloch from Small Box Games.

Also, since you both seem to like deckbuilders... what about Dominion? Not my favorite game, but many claim it's almost best played with two. If you want more fighting, you could also consider Nightfall.

I love this game. Love it love it love it. My 12 year old asks to play it at least 5 nights a week lol. In the end, we try to get in at least 2 a week. Seriously, I love it, as in, I give it 9/10 here on BGG.
