I just got my new copy of the game, am not disappointed but do have a question.

Do revolts happen all that often? It just seems like from my initial rules reading that revolts can be prevented with proper province play.

Am I wrong in this?

No, your not wrong. Players decide which province to use for food and gold, so revolts occur because of player actions.

Occasionally you will badly need food or money from a rich province, so you may risk it. But it's not a frequent thing.

I believe revolts are triggered by 2 situations
1) if you collect food or tax AND there's at least one token present
or
2) can't feed in winter, therefore. x revolts

Remember that this will increase revolts (on average) in a 5 player game vs a 3 player game, since one will have less counties...which will increase the likelihood that you'll want to risk the 'high' income/food counties (especially if you're down to 6 counties by Autumn of the first year.
