I just played this again for the first time in about a year. This is also the first time I played with the expansion. It was very fun, but my only problem is that we all seemed to have a lot of money. Am I right that money is only used for building, war, and five dollar specialist? I thought money was much tighter before.

Yes, you're right. So maybe the problem is the way you collect your money? You get 10$ at the beginning of the game (plus bonuses in further turn order) and after paying for the first building you start getting short of it. You get money from sets of commodities, from some buildings and when sending a merchant to the new world. In the first era we never suffer any abundance of money :)

The Builder Expansion seems to make money more available, probably from each player having an extra worker or two (I'm looking at you, England). That may be why they included the new rule allowing players to buy VPs at the end of each Age.

There are those who look at things the way they are and ask why . . . I dream of things that never were and ask why not

I've played the expansion four times, and money is more easily obtained. That used to be one of my biggest deficiencies; but, even I get a pretty good abundance most of the time.

My thoughts are two-fold: 1) The builder gives a discount on buildings of $5, which saves money (just as good as acquiring it), allowing the purchase of an additional building and 2) The National Advantage tile that allows a free Merchant. $5 per turn? Yes, please.
No one else took the Merchant specialist? $10? I'm in. Now no one else has taken the builder, either? I'm in . . . Like Flint.

Like the base game, blocking is still all-important, especially with trade goods and specialists.
