Wargames and their blood-and-guts (the term "Ameritrash" has been spoiled) cousins have always catered to two (not mutually exclusive) groups of us: the mayhem crowd, and the simulation crowd. And generally the mayhem crowd feels that simulation is the perfect basis for mayhem, and the simulation crowd feels that there's little else so interesting to simulate as mayhem. We're talking in a historical sense, of course—those space-gamers can go sit over there.

This is evident, in varying degrees, most places you look in wargaming. Though sometimes it's more overt than others:

But in the late ’70s and early ’80s, wargame publishers settled on a strategy that seems to have fallen out of practice nowadays: Not merely splashing pulpy art across the boxfront, not merely lovingly breathing bore sizes and tank acronyms, but in fact taunting wargamers into buying their games. More explicitly, questioning the capability of wargamers to actually play their games at all. In other words,

Only The Stout Hearted Need Apply.

I've noticed a few of these games in my own collection, hidden away on boxbacks and inserts, and posted them following.

Anyone have any gems of their own?

Considering the events of the past few days, if anyone tries to take this into a discussion of gender roles, I will ask Roger to delete this thread. Thank you.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Bonus points if anyone knows this reference without having to look it up:

You are one of the few.

"Basic Brain Power" : I always enjoyed that expression.

Notice, though, that this is more a Geek/Nerd thing, then a Testosterone (Estrogen) thing ...

EDIT: changed a word and added the last sentence.

Yes. I keep this sitting on one of my shelves, where I can always see it.

The "Name of Bright Friend" line always gets me, too.

Yeah, but to us sittin-in-chairs-pushin-cardboard crowd, our impression of testosterone-laden games is all a mind thing, anyway. The only muscles I need are for taking Lost Battles down from the shelf.

But talking about mind as if it were muscles is what sold wargames during certain periods ...

And I'd argue that depicting it that way is still what sells half the wargames we buy today.

My mind ... has become a Tiger tank.

Doesn't that phrase feel good?

I just sent one of these out with my friend as the return address and recipient. I'm not sure if USPS returns post cards.

I have hundreds of these, so I thought what the heck.

Not from a wargame, but this thread instantly reminded me something.

The label on Arrogant Bastard Ale states:

"This is an aggressive ale. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We would suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory–maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beverage will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make things taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.

At Stone Brewing, we believe that pandering to the lowest common denominator represents the height of tyranny - a virtual form of keeping the consumer barefoot and stupid. Brought forth upon an unsuspecting public in 1997, Arrogant Bastard Ale openly challenged the tyrannical overlords who were brazenly attempting to keep Americans chained in the shackles of poor taste. As the progenitor of its style, Arrogant Bastard Ale has reveled in its unprecedented and uncompromising celebration of intensity. There have been many nods to Arrogant Bastard Ale…even outright attempts to copy it… but only one can ever embody the true nature of liquid Arrogance!"

I dunno - look at those Roman soldiers wanting to shake hands in unison. Look at the thoughtful Gallic warrior refusing to bleed buckets onto the nicely dressed Roman. Quite a genteel crowd.

They also say "play like you got a pair" in the copy. Which I recall at their first gen con led to accusations of institutionalied sexism by a female executive from a rival miniatures company. But that thread has run it's course, and I really shouldn't start it up again...

"What is best in life?"

"The camaraderie of friends, a great narrative, and just plain wholeseome fun."

"Wrong!! Conan, what is best in life?!"

"To use every game mechanic, every semi-colon of the rules, and the focused application of every General strategy guide you've ever read, to blast such a monstrously exploitable hole in your opponent's line, that he won't recover until the next edition of the game...Oh yeah, and to hear the lamentation of the women."

"Ugh...hmmm...urgh..yes...yes, he's right...."

This thread title, "Not For Wimps!: 50% More Testosterone Than God", raised expectations for me to see a certain man... an awesome man...

Am I then the first to post his image? :

This is as much testosterone as you can get in a cover:

Sorry I couldn't find a better picture. This is the Spanish cover for the RuneQuest module Snake Pipe Hollow.

This was hard to explain to my mother.

I'd show the logical proof, but there's a character limit on posts.

Anyway, if he doesn't, every other organism of both sexes has it, so he has all he wants at his disposal ... but not as much as Flat Top.
