Hounds of Tindalos ran two Thing games once upon a time. I emailed him about the option of re-running this game, but he hasn't logged in since 2011 and he was all for it (as long as I gave him appropriate credit. heh.), so I'm going to take this and run with it unless someone has a meltdown on me.

For your reference:
The Thing
The Thing Redux

I have taken liberally from Hounds's original post. If you see something that makes you curious, ask. For example, we will be using Cassandra and not liberally PM'ing each other.

On to the game.

Werewolf: The Thing (Reboot) -- Rules

The game thread will be rated R for strong language and brutal, outlandish, gooey, king-crab-legged violence.

Setting

Antartica. Winter, 1982

United States National Science Institute Station 4, also known as Outpost 31

“First goddamn week of winter…”

This variation of Werewolf will feature a battle between the human station personnel and an unseen threat in the form of a shape-changing alien menace, thawed from a ten-thousand-year-old block of ice. A deadly menace that hides in human guise. Who goes there!

Game Start and Schedule

This game will start on February 27th with first lynch on March 2nd. There will not be weekend play, although players are free to continue posting in the thread.

Days & Nights

Lynch time will be 7:00 pm BGG.
Night orders must be submitted by 8:00 pm BGG.

Night actions

Night actions take place in the following order:

Wide Awake
Protector
Things
Witness
Experimental serum, if used
Doctor
Transformation roll for infected humans
Blood tester
Prognosticator
Intuitive
Hypnotist

Posts

Players may not delete posts or parts of posts. Posts may be slightly edited to correct typos or other minor errors, but an edit notification explaining the edit must be added to the bottom of the post.

There will be no spoilers revealed during the game.

Things will have a chat.
Infected humans will not.
The Lovers will have a chat.

Votes

Vote formatting will be according to Cassandra protocols. Do not edit vote posts.

Votes with timestamps after the deadline will not be counted.

Any player missing more than one full night/day cycle without posting will be replaced. If a replacement player cannot be located within 24 hours of being put up for replacement, that player will be modkilled.

Role Reveal

There will be full role reveal.
All-claims or any variation on that theme is against the rules for this game. Players who participate in an all-reveal plan will suffer an unfortunate lab accident and the less said about that, the better. Just trust that it will be bad…

Roles & Abilities

Some players will get a role from the movie listed below with a special ability. Not every role has special abilities. Non-special “vanillager” roles are interns at the facility. One or two special roles may be “ringers” meaning they may not be in the game but are there to make you nervous.

Special abilities are listed below.

6 people will start out as Things and one person will be MacReady (this game’s version of the seer). The Things are randomly assigned, so don’t assume the guys who were Things in the movie will be Things in this game. 4 of the starting Things will have a secret special ability.

The roles (with abilities listed in blue) are:

17 staff:

MacReady (helicopter pilot) Blood-tester
Dr. Blair (Senior biologist/vet tech) Prognosticator
Palmer (mechanic/backup pilot) Intuitive
Childs (mechanic) Tough guy
Dr. Copper (medical doctor) Doctor
Norris (geologist) Hypnotist
Bennings (meteorologist) Experimental serum
Clark (dog handler) Knife escape
Captain Garry (station captain) Protector
Fuchs (biologist/botanist) Backup blood tester
Windows (radio operator) Wide Awake
Nauls (cook) Witness
Dr. Carrington (biologist) Misguided scientist
Dr. Nikki Spencer (psychologist) Persuader
Twitchy Norwegian (survivor from Norwegian camp) Secret special power
Dr. Stern and Dr. Chapman: these two players will be Lovers

Plus 10 interns (Villagers)

Total: 27 players, of which 6 will be Things

Special Role Abilities

Blood tester – this is the seer in this game. Each night Mac may secretly choose one person and examine a sample of his or her blood. If the person is a Thing Mac will know it. There may be more than one Blood tester in the game. The Backup blood tester (Fuchs) becomes the blood tester if MacReady is killed or transforms into a Thing. MacReady will get an N0.

Infected humans do not show up as Things on the blood test until they reach a 55% chance to become a Thing.

On day four or any time thereafter, the Blood tester may call for a public blood test: this replicates the scene in the movie where everyone is in the same room doing the blood test. When declared, the public blood test takes the place of the next day’s lynching. There will only be one public blood test per game. The moderator will announce the public blood test at dawn and will run the test at the next dusk.

The public blood test will definitely reveal the identity of one Thing, but the downside is, the Thing becomes enraged and attacks and will kill one of the humans before it can be lynched. Both the Thing and its victim will be dead after the results of the blood test are revealed. The identities of the revealed Thing and the victim will be determined randomly.

Prognosticator - Blair has a computer squirreled away where only he can find it. Each night Blair can compute, with a +/- 1 margin of error, how many Things there are in the station. Blair cannot determine how many infected humans there are.

Intuitive – Don’t harsh Palmer’s buzz—each night he can go into a weed-induced trance and examine one player to see if he or she is infected. If the person he chooses is a full-fledged Thing, or is not infected, nothing registers for him.

Tough guy – Childs don’t believe this voodoo bullshit and he is sure as hell takin’ a Thing down with him if he is attacked. If the Things attempt to kill or infect Childs he will kill one of them before he dies or if he is infected. If Childs is infected, he will remember only the identity of the Thing he killed.

Doctor – Dr. Copper can attempt to save one person each night. If that person is attacked by the Things, Copper has a 50% chance of saving that person (if targeted for a kill) or stopping the infection (if targeted for infection). The person Copper saves WILL NOT have voting rights the next day due to their need to recover, but may debate. Neither Copper nor the saved player will be informed that the vote does not count - the effect will only be applied after dusk. Copper will not be informed if he was successful or not. Copper cannot protect the same person each night, but can protect themselves.

Wide Awake – Windows has to stay awake as much as possible to send out the Mayday signals from the radio. One side effect of this (besides lack of sleep) is that he interferes with the stealthy movement of the Things. Once per game the Windows player may submit a night order that prevents any Kill or Infection by the Things that night. The result of Window’s action will be listed as NO KILL.

Experimental serum – Once the crisis began, Bennings discovered a syringe filled with an oily black fluid, along with some notes by Blair about the experimental serum. Once per game, Bennings may send a night order to the mod announcing he is injecting a player. If injected into a Thing, the serum will kill it. If injected into an infected human, the serum will stop the infection. Unfortunately, if injected into a regular human, that human will then come up as positive to MacReady's and Palmer's game orders.

Knife escape – Clark has a pocketknife that no one knows about. When attacked by Things or lynched, Clark fights back with the knife and manages to escape. Must be targeted again later on. This ability only works once. Basically, it's a tough.

Protector – Captain Garry, while gruff, wants to protect his people. Once during the game he can declare a specific number of players "safe" from the Things’ kill/infection that night. The number of players he can protect starts at one on day one and increases with each day that passes--for instance, on day four he can protect four players, and so on.

Hypnotist – Norris is an amateur hypnotist, and as such he may pick one player publicly known to be infected, and hypnotize that person in an effort to determine the identity of one of the Things. He has a 50% chance of success. Unfortunately, if he fails, the infected person will have a false memory that a non-Thing was the one who attacked him.

Witness – Nauls is a rollerskatin’ sumbitch, but he has a good eye. Each night he will choose a person to observe. If the Things target that person, Nauls will see the attack and determine the identity of one of the Things. If the Things do not target that person, then Nauls obviously sees nothing. Once Nauls views an attack, his ability is used up and cannot be used again.

Misguided scientist – Dr. Carrington means well, but lack of sleep and overwork during the crisis has warped his mind. He considers the Things to be superior life-forms, to be protected from the humans. He wins if the Things win. Dr. Carrington knows who the Things are but they don’t know who he is. (Carrington is an Aux. Evil / Cultist)

Persuader – As a psychologist, Dr. Nikki Spencer understands people and can affect their motivations. Through the power of persuasion, Nikki can alter the outcome of one lynch. Once per game, the Nikki player may use a game order and shift the lynch result to one of the other lynch candidates in the queue, or cause a “NO LYNCH” result, as desired. The only acceptable choices are people who have at least one vote or the No Lynch option. Basically, Spencer is a limited Governor.

Twitchy Norwegian – Also known to MacReady as “Hey Swede!” This is the sole human survivor (Lars) from the Norwegian camp. The person who is the Twitchy Norwegian will not know it and his/her special ability is known only to the moderator.

Lovers – Dr. Stern and Dr. Chapman are lab supervisors who happen to be classic lovers from WW. They will have a mason chat and will win a special victory at the end of the game if they are both A) alive and B) are both human, both infected or both Things. The Lovers are not win-stealing, due to the extra condition required.

The Things

There are six Things to start with and four of them have a secret special ability. Those players who become Things during the game will not gain any special ability, but they will lose whatever special ability they had as a human. Upon becoming Things, they will learn the identity of the other Things and be able to PM them.

Each night the Things may choose to Kill or Infect one player. A kill is treated like any kill in a Werewolf game. A majority of Things must agree on which player will be attacked and whether it will be a kill or an infection. All game orders by all Things will be considered - if there are ties, then no action will take place.

Infection: If the Things choose to infect, then the player they choose has been infused with Thing cells and will begin to transform into a Thing. A byproduct of infection is a sort of amnesia that prevents the player from remembering the Things who infected him. The player will know he is infected, however. Upon initial infection (dawn) there is a 20% chance that the player will immediately become a Thing. If not, then the next day, at nightfall, the player has an additional 5% chance (25%) and so on each day until he or she turns into a Thing. Infected humans win if the humans win, but once they transform into a Thing they win if the Things win. If a human is infected, a NO KILL notification will be sent at daybreak.

Infected humans show up as human to the blood tester unless they are up to a 55% chance or higher. Infected humans are known to the Things. The Things are not known to them.

If an infected player converts / promotes, they will join the Thing chat. When this happens, there is a small chance they may develop a Max Evil ability.

Being infected does not give you immunity from the Things — they can still target you for a kill if they decide you are too much of a threat.

Mod messages

Game result messages (lynchings, killings, descriptions) in blue

Moderator rulings or responses to questions in red -- be sure to ask mod questions in red, as well.

Victory

Humans (including infected humans) win if all the Things are eliminated.

Things win when their number reaches equilibrium/parity with the number of humans and infected humans.

Current minimum requirement of 16 Players (may be adjusted later).

----------------------------------------------
Standard fine print:

----------------------------------------------
In addition to the above victory conditions:
Draw - If everyone dies, then I win and all players end in a draw.

Lynch Rules:

Each day players vote for one player to be lynched. The player receiving the most votes is killed. If there is a tie between two or more players, the killed player will be decided at random amongst all tied leaders.

Lynch time is 7:00 PM BGG Time. Votes cast with the lynch time time-stamp are counted. Votes cast after this time are invalid. Votes made during the night phase are invalid.

All votes must conform to the Cassandra Vote Tally System rules. (Will be posted once the game starts). If all living players vote night fall it will speed up the dusk.

Night Orders:

All night orders must be submitted by Dawn. Dawn will be at 8:00 PM BGG time. Players can do this by using the Cassandra Game Order system in the Cassandra Chat System.

If all living players (including those without night actions) click on the 'Lock Game Actions' button it will speed up Dawn.

Role Reveal:

All roles will be revealed on death (regardless of method)(Full Role Reveal).

Replacement / Posting Rules:

This is not a "Post For Your Life" game. However, anyone who does not communicate at least once during a Dawn - Dusk cycle will be put up for replacement. Valid communication includes:
Posting in the thread,
Talking in your Modchat in Cassandra, or
Geekmailing the moderator.
Exceptions will obviously be made for anyone that announces ahead of time that they will be away from the internet.
Players will be allowed to replace themselves (clicking on the replace icon indicates that you are near the internet - right?).

Please do not sign up for the game if you do not plan on being an active player. Thank you.
You are required to show a proof of life prior to "12 hours before first dusk".

Please note that these are "bare minimums". The moderator has the right to hit the replace button in spite of your meeting the "one post per day" guideline if you are unresponsive to geekmails / modchat queries. This will not be done capriciously and will only be done after consultation with outside parties, to ensure objectivity.

Please don't post after the Dusk/Dawn deadline, even if the mod has not told you to stop posting. Warnings will be given for first offenses, but repeated offenses might have consequences. (*Please ensure that you are aware of Meta Rule #6.)

Making out-of-game promises to other players in order to influence their actions in a game is against the rules, so is quoting something told to you by the moderator directly from your hidden modchat, unless the rules of a game specifically say otherwise or the moderator has given you explicit permission. Paraphrasing such things is usually allowed.

Personal attacks or offensive language will merit a warning. Second offense will merit a modkill. Granted, this is subjective, so I will always get a second opinion before acting. Regardless, I'm tired of the hostility and the occasional attitude.
Police yourselves, please.

META RULES:

1. I will allow players to geekmail me before the game and request a role. They can do this by requesting a specific role, an alignment or "anything but".
2. The informal "Do Not Lynch" the newbie guideline is not applicable in this game.
3. Editing posts is discouraged, but in most cases, it will not elicit anything other than a "tsk, tsk" from another player. However, if you [vote nightfall] and then edit your post to cancel that vote and I see it, you will be modkilled. There are no second chances.
4. Deleting posts is considered very poor form. Unless you are deleting one of two identical posts, just let it go.
5. If you post game-changing information after the dusk/dawn time - for example, seer views, fake seer views, sorcerer views - you and a random member of your team will be modkilled. This is not negotiable.
A. This does not require the moderator to say "No posting." If dusk is at 4:00 and you post something that reflects 4:01, you are late.
B. If the moderator posts "No posting" at 4:00:15 and you post at 4:00:20, you have still posted after the no posting rule.
Accidentally continuing a conversation / posting a silly comment after the moderator has posted 'No posting' will not warrant any punishment (unless it is game-changing or repetitive).
It is YOUR responsibility to monitor for dusk/dawn.

Important Information:
Tiebreaker: random amongst all lynch leaders
Lynch time: 7:00 PM BGG Time
Night Action Deadline: 8:00 PM BGG Time

Weekend Policy: No game actions will process over the American weekend, although players will be free to post and use chats as desired.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

As an FYI, here's Snaak's "Guide to Playing Werewolf on BGG!" (now maintained by PeteVasi).

Here is a Dictionary of terms that are used often in our BGG WW games: /wiki/page/BGG_Werewolf_PBF_Dictionary

Here is a (not all-inclusive) list of Roles that are commonly used here on the Geek: /wiki/page/BGG_Werewolf_PBF_Role_List

BoardGameGeek and thecassandraproject both base their time functions on THIS server:
http://us.pool.ntp.org/
It doesn't account for your personal delay in posting, but it will help show you what time it is in BGG-land. Use the information as you will. (Basically, sniping is not forbidden, but if you mess it up, your team will suffer.)

Please note that the moderator does not have consistent access to The Cassandra Project during the standard business day, M-F (eastern time). Out-of-thread contact will have to be conducted via geekmail during those hours.

Another awesome game, from an awesome short story...

I'd sign up, if only the lynch-time would be doable for me (i.e. no later that 5pm).

You don't HAVE to be here at lynch. If you have to go at 5, or 4, or whatever, just be active until that point and then you can consider your vote 'nightfallen'. There are no rules that say you have to be present at lynch.

That being said, I set it at 6 so that more folks west of BGG time can play. If there's a lot of folks that want it pushed back, I can push it back.

Well, I'll think about it.

I really do like the games you are setting up, linguist!

2 weeks away. If I can't get to the 16 players, there's a roleset in the WW Development thread that allows for 12.

... Can we get there in 2 weeks or does this get pushed far to the right?

There's not much of a worry about that yet. We're not close to the minimum number of players, and as I was briefed when making Deckbuilding 2, people really don't like Conversion. Well, or they don't as I write this. ... From what I've been told.

We'll see if people are interested in giving this a shot the next time it comes up. Maybe it'll pique some interest.

PM a bunch of players talking about how cool this game is and how much fun it will be. It usually yields at least a few signups.

I did that for Massacre 2 (by geekmailing all of game 1500), and it helped ... But it feels very in-your-face. Something that I am not so good with.

Right now, I'm just hoping that I'll have a decent schedule / Internet access when I'm overseas, wishing I was back. If that's the case, I'll try and run this in a couple of months and will definitely consider your suggestion more seriously.
