Hi All

My brother, who is a writer, is planning to write a book set in Silesia in 1740 on the eve of the Prussian invasion, and knowing my historical interests he has been asking me for recommendations for books that he can use to do some research. The scope is basically books about:

Frederick the Great
The War of Austrian Succession
The experience of war in that period
Anything specific to Silesia or to it's subsequent position in the Prussian state

I have been able to recommend the Reed Browning/Franz Szabo's books on the War of Austrian Succession and Seven Years War respectively, and many things by Christopher Duffy on eighteenth-century warfare. I haven't read anything specifically about Frederick the Great so couldn't make any recommendations there. Would anyone be able to add to this list with any recommendations of their own? All contributions gratefully received.

Dave

-War on the Austrian Succession by Reed S. Browning
-The Seven Years War in Europe by Franz A.J. Zsabo

These two are my favorite books on this subjects: both included in-depth treatment of the politic involved in these conflict and both described the military aspect very well. They are both in recent publication, and in print...

Yes. Dennis Showalter - 'The Wars of Frederick the Great'. I genuinely couldn't put it down.

Frederick the Great is a classic look at Frederick the Great as a developing powerhouse through to his later reign, and might be useful for providing some character depth.

Cheers,

Jacovis

And Barry Lyndon, of course.

Really can't go wrong with Showalter: Well-written, detailed on every topic he's tackled.
