The rules which are printed on the inside of the box lid, state that the queen has a value of 1, the workers value 2, and the warriors value 3. This is a somewhat misleading term, since it in fact refers to the number of intersections a piece may move on its turn. The pieces move exactly the number of intersections stated; they may not move less. Since capture is by replacement, a warrior bee which is three corners away from an enemy bee may capture it, (providing there are no other bees in the way); a bee may never move through another bee.) but it cannot do so if the enemy is only one or two intersections away, even though the other bee may be able to capture it. It is not uncommon in the three and four player games for an almost solid mass of workers and warriors to form, in which the only ones which can move are the ones at the edges.

The rules of the game are straight-forward enough, the only possible ambiguity being whether a player's queen must move onto one of the corners of the central hexagon and then move into it to win, or whether by merely arriving at the edge of it the player has won. Once a player's queen has been captured, he is eliminated from the game and his other bees remain on the board. There is one other rule, that players may begin to make captures from the second move onwards, although this only in practice applies to the four player game, as in the two and three player versions the bees do not start off close enough to effect captures on the first move of the game.
