I recently found a white box version of this game, which I hadn't seen before. The rules have a 1971 copyright, but the back of the box says 1972. Is there any information about this edition?

Phalanx came out in 1971 in a large white envelope(which I have) and had a 1 color map(gray) compared to the later 2 color map(black/blue).also it was a tad larger having more blank border around the edges.

In '72 SPI came out with their white flat boxes and when you bought them you got a bunch of stickers with different game titles to put on for the game you were wanting. It was also sold that way seperately in the white box too.

I have all 3 versions of the game, envelope, white flat box, plastic flat tray w/coversheet

Oh the memories of the good old dayscool

Thanks for the information. I was surprised to find an unpunched copy of this at a thrift store, and I'm not sure if I want to try playing it, or just sell it.

if you end up selling it let me know first

I'm very surprised a unpunched copy still around and at a thrift store to boot. It is a v ery good game on one of the better early SPI Tac games.
If you go over to the Consimworld Era:Ancients/Medieval there is a Phalanx folder and a whole bunch of new scenario's to add to the game.uyou just need to go through all the postings to find them(or the Outline tab for a quicker way)

Phalanx was one of my favorite SPI games back in the day and still is.many of those Consimworld new scenario's are mine and Steven Guy.

I will do that. Usually when I thrift a game, I open it up and find the pieces scattered and many are missing. It was a very nice surprise to find the game in such good shape.
