I recently bought a copy of Talisman and took it out of the shrink.

It had some sticky, crusty residue all over the cover of the rule book. I would say some sticky liquid was spilled on it but the pages didn't have water damage. Unfortunately, it won't show up on a picture so a description will have to do. I am at a loss to explain it as it was a new game.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Any suggestions on what to do?

That sounds... icky yuk Perhaps you can contact the publisher to see if they'll send you a replacement? Especially since it was a new game!

Edit to add: If you have the Fantasy Flight edition: I've heard really good things about their customer service and getting replacement tokens/rulebooks/etc

It's the Games Workshop edition so I know customer service isn't an option. I do have the FFG upgrade pack.

I would guess some adhesive was spilled, not all adhesives are water based enough to cause some type or warping.

If it's printed on a glossy paper I'd just try a normal wet wipe or bleach wipe first, making sure its not dripping with cleaner. Perhaps place a heavy piece of chipboard or the like between the cover and the pages prior to wiping clean. If you get any warping gently using a warm iron to it later would fix that up. If it's a regular paper stock it will be too porous to try a wet anything so I would suggest just trying a pencil eraser and rubbing. Hopefully that would be enough but if not some painter's tape and trying to lift the guck slowly would be my next step. Good luck!
