Have fun playtesting!
Feedback appreciated!

v0.1: Major change in the OL events. More different monster/traps/events
-------------

Preparation:
All of the Overlord cards stay in the box, they have no use here.
A normal d6 die is needed.

Change in rules:
As long as not mentioned specifically, all of the original rules apply.

Hero phase:
No changes.

Monster movement:
All monsters move
First archers then melee fighters --> Archers stop within 3 squares (consider range bonus), after the attack they retreat.
Melee fighters go to the hero attack and then retreat.
Monster with highest movement points first.
Masters before minions.
Target: Consider accessibility and priority (low HP, weak armor, lots of money)
During the attack monsters gain +1 damage for every 2 surge symbols.

Overlord phase:
Deal out the threat tokens as in the normal play.
As soon as the OL has 20 or more threat tokens, exactly 20 tokens are going back to the bank and the d6 is needed to be rolled. One of the following handicap events comes into play:

1 Brilliant Commander --> When the Heroes reach a new area, the strongest monster is automatically upgraded to Master.
2 Dark armor --> Each monster gets +1 armor.
3 Doom --> From now on each monster uses 1 additional black die.
4 Time pressure --> The OL gets +1 Threat counter each turn.
5 Monster LV Up --> All monsters get +1 Life.
6 Rage --> Each hero is worth 1 more conquest token.
All events are cumulative! At the end monster may have +2 Life and +1 black die for example.

Afterwards there is the possibility that another OL events occurs. It is determined as follows.
In the 1st round you roll 1 black die.
In the 2nd round you roll 2 black dice.
...
Hint: You can use the d6 to mark how many black dice are needed to be rolled.
If there is one or more blank on your black dice result, than an OL event occurs. Additionally in the next round you again start with 1 black die. The following round then with 2...

OL event: The d6 is being rolled and afterwards turned back to 1 (remember 1 back die for the next round). One of the following OL events comes into play --> See table below.

Monsters are spawned after the usual rules. If there are no monsters at all on the board or if there is no possibility to spawn at least 1 monster, then play a trap instead. Same counts for double attack or -move.
Traps are always played on the hero with the fewest remaining hit points.

interesting I will try and get my group to trial test it this weekend or next

the only fuzzy part is the hero group has to roll 1 black die after their turns and if blank OL event then next round they roll 2 and rinse and repeat

thats how I read it anyway is this correct

Here is an example that should make the OL events more clear. I also renmaned the threat based events into handicap events to make a clear separation!

abbreviation for black die = bd

1st round: 1 bd --> no blank is rolled
2nd round: 2 bd --> no blank is rolled
3rd round: 3 bd --> blank is rolled, trap or monsters come into play
4th round: 1 bd --> no blank is rolled
5th round: 2 bd --> blank is rolled, trap or monsters come into play
6th round: 1 bd
...

Worked out fantastic with a dungeon today, however needed some tweeking about the OL points to choose cards but my group came up with a solution for that.

My group is still on Alter of dispar so i didn't try in on RTL or above yet
good job just needs minor tweeks hre and there

P.S. also edited traps so we roll when we opened a door or chest and if a blank we at random select a trap card in either chest or door and if a trap is triggered by round end rolls we use trap or trap (space) cards randomly selected makes it more fun for us I think

thanks man

sincerely,
Gabriel

This is definitely the most interesting solo/co-op variant I've seen for Descent so far, so kudos for that. I doubt I'll ever get around to trying this variant in 1e myself, but I'll keep it in mind for possible translation to 2e rules.

I would recommend adding that information to the first post in this thread. This will prevent people from typing pages of replies with suggestions, only to discover afterwards they are five versions behind... cool
