Had played through all the Dead Rising scenarios using the variant that the Necromancer gets another baleful gaze every time a dwarf dies. It balanced the game in most of the scenarios, though two scenarios including the big finale battle it could not save.

Then we got Ancient Grudge and started playing multiplayer. In order to effectively play multiplayer, you have to develop and sustain operations on multiple fronts against foes that start far away from you. The Necromancer could not do that and so could not win multiplayer games. We needed a new variant for the Necromancer, so we tried the variant that at the end of his turn the Necromancer can discard any unwanted tokens and then completely refresh his token pool, like every other race. This is the only change from the Dead Rising rules for undead, so under this variant there is no way to gain additional baleful gazes.

After some playtesting we are settling on this as a better solution to Necromancer play balance. It should allow the Necromancer to play better in scenario 6 in Dead Rising, though we haven't tested it. The Necromancer still has serious balance issues in multiplayer because his pieces are so slow and he has zero follow-on actions. But at least now he has some small chance in a multiplayer game.

Have played some multiplayer DKH using this Necromancer-refills-pool variant. It is necessary enough that we have adopted it as a house rule change. The lack of follow on actions still kills the Necromancer player in multiplayer though. We are considering giving the Necromancer a baleful gaze each turn for free in addition to the above variant.
