For the long answer, check out this Shopping Guide to Runebound.

For a short answer--well, I don't have one, as I don't own any big-box expansions. But I hear Sands of Al-Kalim is good.

Sands of al-khalim is the best.

The second would be frozen waste.

The third is midnight.

The fourth is isle of dread.

The only one I have not played is zanaga... so I can't comment on it.

I think that midnight is no longer available.

Seconded. Sands of al-khalim changes everything about the game, including the goal (the goal is to complete epic quests, rather than to kill a big bad).

Sands plays very differently than the base set.

Travel between cities is hard. Either go by day and suffer stamina damage and exhaust yourself or go by night and suffer harder encounters.

As such, the adventures are not really harder than the base set, but travelling is.

The big box with the hardest encounters is without any doubt isle of dread. The main problem of that expansion is that the end game is so difficult, the game can drag on and on for a very long time.

To make Runebound harder, try the Threat Track. It's included in the defunct Midnight expansion, but you can also find it in the BGG files section (on the Runebound page). It's easy to use, and it adds as much time pressure to the game as you want. Works solo or with other players (it really helps when playing solo).

Isle of dread is good, but has a serious flaw IMO.
Green are OK, yellow are okay...
Then you get straight to red because there are no "blue" per say. They are replaced by sea adventures which are all over the place in difficulty.
You therefore get stuck longer doing yellow than in the regular game.

And then there is another level even more difficult than the red: the silver level. The expansion requires you to tackle around 2 of these real hard adventures with no rest between fights before you tackle the final monster, which makes margath look easy in comparison.
You need to be of a really high level to tackle the silver encounters. There's not enough red card to make you level quickly. So you might turn over the red deck three times in a single game...

Its just that the progression is not smooth. Green... yellow... yellow... yellow... red... red.. red... red... silver.

Game last almost twice as long as the regular runebound.

I think that i will get Sands of al-kalim. Almost everyone think its the best expansion.
But can you explain me or send me a link that explain the game in deep ?
