Well, I did it. I completed my first marathon.
I say "completed" rather than "ran", cause boy, it was ugly.

I traveled to the Jersey Shore to run the NJ Marathon.

The first half went great, but at mile 16, my calves started cramping up. By mile 20 I was mostly walking. By mile 23, i could barely do that. I soldiered on and finally was able to run the last half mile or so past the dwindling crowds.

I finished with a time of 5:34:28. BUT... I DID finish.

Resting up this week, and I'll begin training for my next soon. Still looking forward to "running" a marathon...

Congrats. Just remember, the first person who ran a marathon died immediately afterwards. So, at least you did better than that.

Congratulations. You beat my attempt by 9 minutes. I haven't run a second yet. I'm looking to do one sometime in the fall though, haven't decided yet which.

It's an amazing accomplishment, it's not the kind of thing you can cram for, the consistent training is what makes that distance so great. Welcome to the club!

On a side note, it makes half marathons seem easy peasy.

Unfortunately, after about a month though, running distances of more than say 15 or 16 miles seems hard again.

First and only one I've done was 2-1/2 years ago. First 20 miles were great, by mile 22 it was try to run for 5 minutes, walk until you can run again...

4:56:32 I'm a big guy, not one to set any land speed records.

You are correct and congratulated on "completing" your first marathon, kudos! I've said I wanted to run one more with my brother in law, just don't know if that is going to happen... :)

Good luck on the next one!

The consensus on the running boards is that I need more long runs under my belt. So after a short rest, I'm gonna get back on that the horse and start training for the next one.

I think I just spotted the flaw in my own training program...

You are unhappy with that time? The one I finished a few years ago: 8 hours 0 minutes 23 seconds.

Great job!

Congrats on finishing your first marathon! I will probably try one myself at some point, but I don't know when. How much training did you do before the run?

Awesome, awesome and inspirational stuff!

Don't get disheartened by your time, you completed it and that is the main thing about a marathon. The training really doesn't compare to the racing at all. When I ran mine, first of all the longest run I had done in training was 31kms (~19miles) so I was quite lost after that point. Also getting caught up in the action is really hard to avoid, which can lead to struggling for the second part of the race, I did the first half of the marathon in 1:30 and the second in 2:05 simply from trying too hard. I hope you can kick on, I have started to run again since your post on the half marathon, and it isn't easy after 3 years of not doing much running at all.

Again congratulations and enjoy the post race high!

I followed an 18 week training plan. There's a bunch out there, most are very similar.
