The second concept that belongs to all games of the trilogy is: Evolution and Upgrading

In a city, things change very quickly, as each citizen tries to find the best situation. To simplify the evolution of the city, only two sorts of modules are able to evolve: the shops and the flats. (Parking lots may also evolve, but in a very different way as we will see.)

1) The more people that surround a shop, the bigger the shop will become. Following the concept of adjacency introduced in the first article, if a shop of one cube is adjacent to two different apartments (whatever the size), the shop will evolve during the development phase of the game. Players just add from the reserve one blue cube to make the shop bigger.

If a shop of 2 cubes is adjacent to 3 different apartments, this shop will evolve again. It is of course possible to have several rounds of evolution.

And so on...

The bigger the shops are, the more money they will earn. The higher they are built, the more money they will earn again. In Town Center, the third dimension is important!

During the development phase of the 3th round, the blue shop in the center is adjacent to two different apartments. It will evolve.

The player has two choices. He may add one blue cube on the ground floor to increase the size at this level, which will make it easier to evolve again in future turns. Or he may choose to stack the new blue cube one top of the existing one. The taller shop will generate more money, but do not forget that money is not directly the aim of the game. The black tower is an elevator of height two. This allows a player to start building on the second level of his town center, provided the elevator is electrified by an adjacent yellow generator.

2) The apartments are also eligible to evolve.

In order to evolve, apartments must be adjacent to offices. Offices generate jobs for the citizens, allowing them to upgrade their lifestyle…

An apartment of one cube that is adjacent to two offices will evolve during the development phase. Players just add from the reserve one green cube to make the apartment bigger. If an apartment of 2 cubes is adjacent to 3 offices, the apartment will evolve again. And so on...

The bigger the apartments become, the more victory points they will score. The higher they are built, the more victory points they will score again.

Please note that the city hall players built at the very beginning of the game also counts as one office. This particular building will have a different function later in the trilogy, but that's another story…

With this very nice start for development of the ground floor, one apartment is adjacent only to the city hall (which counts as one office). Only one adjacent office is not enough for this apartment to evolve this round.

The other apartment is adjacent to two offices, so it can evolve in several different ways. The first possibility would be to add one green cube to connect the other apartment. That would make a big apartment of three cubes which would score many victory points. But this big apartment is only on the ground floor and it would be very difficult to make it evolve again.

Another possibility would be to add one green cube near the blue cube. The shop cannot be upgraded this turn, but if another apartment is added later, the shop would become bigger and earn more money. The last possibility is to stack one green cube on the second floor, above the existing apartment. But this is not yet possible since the player has not build the elevator needed to access the second floor ;-)

As the city is growing and growing, you may imagine how many possibilities and different cities players may build with only 6 colors in three dimensions!

Red office cubes and yellow generators do not evolve in the game.

3) Another unique feature of Town Center is the parking lot evolution.

Parking lots are represented by black cubes on the ground floor. They generate money, as we will see in the 5th concept of the game.

If a player decides to stack two black cubes, the entire tower is now considered an elevator and it provides access to the second floor, as long as the elevator is electrified by an adjacent yellow generator.

The stack of two black cubes forms a single elevator. Two yellow generators connect and electrify it (although only one would be sufficient). So player has an access to the second floor. The first black cube on the ground floor is not a parking lot anymore and will not earn money for the player.
