Singapore Catan Nationals 2012
Organiser – Colin Lim
TO – Cheah Siu Hean

Background
The Singapore Catan Nationals has been ongoing since it started in 2007. To date, we had represented Singapore in 3 of the Worldwide Catan Championships tournaments held in Germany. The main goal is to achieve Singapore in the area of Mind Sports on an International level, through participation in the Worlds Event. With the Singapore Catan Nationals held each year at Sporecon, the only Annual Analog games Convention in Singapore, this means that over 500 people per day will attend the

Settlers of Catan has been chosen because it is widely recognised throughout the world as the pioneer of a new generation of board games, winning the prestigious Spiel De Jahres in 1995. With the growth of the board games cafes in Singapore such as Settlers Café and Minds Café, Singapore has the potential to groom mind sports champions.

Tournament Format as follows:
Qualifiers, followed by the top 16 shootout in June 2012 at Spore-Con 2012.

Qualifiers
Qualifiers are run as 16, 32 and 64 round sessions. Qualifier 1 has already taken place on 31st March 2012, with the remaining 2 Qualifiers to be held on 1 May 2012 and 26 May 2012 respectively. The qualifiers are to allow us to select the top 15 players in Singapore to have the final shootout in the finals. The 16th spot will be taken up by Singapore’s first female Champion, Goh Xue Yi, who, as last year’s Champion, will return to defend her title.

The Worldwide Catan Championship 2012 is being hosted in USA. Mayfair Games has announced the event will take place outside Valley Forge, PA at the historic Normandy Farm in September 2012.

Tournament Recognition

The Singapore Catan Nationals 2012 would not have been possible without the following support:

Paradigm Infinitum, distributor for Mayfair Games, which is the publisher for Settlers of Catan, for providing the prize support, air ticket sponsorship and game sets.

People’s Association, who have graciously provided the venue, logistical support and air ticket.

Settler’s Café for providing prize support as well as game sets.

Mr Cheah Siu Hean, Scrabble Association’s President, for help in judging the tournament.

We are always open to more sponsors who wish to support the event in one way or the other. We will acknowledge your support at each event where possible.
