Incredible story. Stay with the plane? It took 70 years to find it!

It would be cool if a 90+ year old man came out from behind it, saluted and asked how the war is going...

That's pretty good! I did not figure it out myself. At first I thought it was a Hurricane, but the intake over the nose did not feel right. I could not recall if a ME109 had such a thing. I was leaning towards some Italian plane perhaps, but it was in 1942 and I am not sure what they were flying then.

To sum up.... I did not have a clue.

joke a Great War vet told me:
"During the 2nd WW a British tanker in the Med. was suddenly confronted by a surfaced sub - and Italian at that. The sub's Captain emerged, calling out to the tanker if the war was still on. Upon confirmation, the sub Captain shouted 'Damn the Kaiser!!'"

Reminds me of that 1970 made-for-television movie "Sole Survivor", starring William Shatner and Richard Basehart.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sole_Survivor_(1970_film)

And also the Twilight Zone episode "King Nine Will Not Return" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Nine_Will_Not_Return

Not Kittyhawks, but B-25s. Still, pretty good stuff.

ETA: You can watch "Sole Survivor" on Google video!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7574338161920794843&...

I believe that the "King Nine" Twilight Zone episode is also available on Hulu.

'moi' even suffered the LOSS of a "Flying Tigers" version model kit that I gave to someone a while ago, as I sure would have liked to then 'found' yet another ONE!-especially such as THIS! I may yet comport some exchange of a "Tall Ship" kit for the "Amerigo Vespucci" training vessel on that now in actual, oh, around 1:350 'scale' , so...

Watching this movie. It's great. Like a play.

There are clips of Vin Scully broadcasting the Dodgers, and he is still around!

The initial headline I saw was, "WWII Fighter Jet Found in North African Desert." I was wondering how an ME262 or other early fighter jet ended up in NA.

From the article:
Quote:
David Keen, an aviation historian at the RAF Museum, says the pilot broke the first rule of survival in the desert, which is to stay with your plane or vehicle.

Er, yes ... damned thoughtless of the fellow. Now they'll have to search all over the desert to find his bones. If he'd followed the rules, the retrieval crew's job would be much easier.

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

CNN has a bunch more photos:
http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/11/world/british-wwii-plane/index...

Very haunting images. Reminds me of The Little Prince, where the pilot crashes in the desert and is dying of thirst.

Oh, those CNN pictures are fantastic!

I think all it needs is a touch of paint and it will be good to go. Kind of.
