Is there a key to the icons that appear on the event preview pages? Some of them are easy to figure out, but not all. What, for example, does the open or closed padlock symbol mean?

Buried at the bottom of each page is a link to http://boardgamers.org/yearbkex/key.htm which explains that an open padlock is a "B" or "C" event (open to newbies) while an "A" event is locked and only experienced-ish players can join.

There is a link at the bottom of each event preview page, but here it is again:

http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/key.htm

The lock indicates whether and how the game will be taught:
A = Advanced (Locked lock): i.e. no demo. You must know the rules to the game before entering.
B = Beginner (Open Lock): a scheduled demo will be held to teach the rules.
C = Coached (uses a "book" icon): The GM will teach the game in the introduction to the event. (Usually used for really simple games)
