hello,

is there any possibility to block animated avatars? Although some of them are really creative and funny I find them significantly irritating. When I want to read some bigger text it is annoying to have some moving picture next to the text. Is there a possibility for me to suppress them so that I don't have to see them If I don't want to?

I think that if you press the Esc key, it will stop the animations. I'm not sure how to do it permanently though. Maybe a browser plug-in?

It depends on the browser you're using, but invoking the "stop" command (or similar) will usually stop animated GIFs.

I'm using Firefox for Mac, and the shortcut is Cmd-Period.

Re: suppress anmated avatars
In Firefox with Adblock Plus, it's possible to suppress individual avatars (right-click and choose "Block image..."), but it has to be repeated for each different avatar.

Adblock Plus

Add the following as a filter: http://geekdo-images.com/avatars/avatar_id*.gif

We should just ban every idiot with an animated avatar.

Firefox and IE will stop animations if you press ESC.

If you are using Firefox, you can disable ALL animations permanently using the steps below:

1. In a new tab type about:config in the address bar and press enter
2. In the filter field type image.animation_mode
3. double-click on image.animation_mode and in the pop-up box type in one of the following:
none — will prevent image animation
once — will let the image animate once
normal (default) — will allow it to play over and over

There's an allegory in here about how Germans shouldn't suppress individual expression for personal values, but I'm sure pointing that out would get me banned...

WTF??? I hope you didn't mean this serious. But just in case this is not the case I will answer you:

1. I didn't ask to ban animated avatars because I respect the personal expression of other users - but I want to have the right to ignore it whenever I want.

2. I suppose this is a reference to nazi-germany. I hope you are aware that WWII ended more than 60 years ago. Both of my parents are born after that! Since then we have a democracy where human rights apply to everyone. (Since when have afroamericans the same rights as white americans?) please stop suggesting anyone wants to suppress individual expressions because he is german!

You also can completely block users ("hide users posts") if there are some especially annoying avatars.

thx - I know this feature. But I'm not as easily offended and usually want to read what others write. Only permanent movement in the corner of my eye is sometimes a bit disturbing.

Yeah, no kidding. Boy are those things ever annoying.
Just back and forth, with the same hypnotic sequence over and over.

Thanks to everyone who flagged offensive posts without responding to them!

Remember - if you see something you want to react negatively to, flag it and forget it. Using the icon serves two functions - first, if enough users flag a post then it will be collapsed from general view. Second, flagging posts helps bring them to the attention of the forum moderators.

With Opera you can exclude the avatars you don't want. If I see avatars, I don't like, I click on "Never show me that avatar again" (or somehow similar)
