I saw Tom Vasel's review of the new edition where he mentions a bidding system for turn order. Has anyone done a home made version to "upgrade" their older edition to include this mechanic and related rules?

I've not seen the new wallenstein, but if it works like Shogun, you need bidding cards that have the same back as your location cards.

Or you could just do a blind bidding system where everyone sticks currency into their hand and holds out a closed fist, then everyone reveals... Regarding the special ability cards you could just make some of those by urself

True. In Shogun the bidding cards are also used as dummy location when you do not want to do an action, but this is not necessary.
