I'm looking for a big game experience, loads of cool stuff in the box, preferably a good theme etc. It can be strategy or adventure, board, card or miniature. But it has to work with two players.

So far I'm leaning towards Runewars, it seems to scale nicely, has a good theme and variation going on. I'd probably enjoy GoT 2nd ed the most, but it doesn't work with two players! cry Battles of Westeros seemed nice too (expect for the glueing thing), but I think I'm interested in more of a complete experience than just scenario fighting.

Android seemed interesting on the theme side of things and apparently it works ok with two players, but maybe not on the top of my list. LOTR CCG seemed nice, but I've got a fair share of card games already (yeah, I know this doesn't fit the topic theme anymore).

Blood Bowl Teammanager, Heroes of Graxia, Warhammer Invasion and so on and so on. Ameritrash-Cardgames for two are really easy to find. When it comes to boardgames the selection gets smaller. Cyclades works great for two players. Red November and Yggdrasil are coops that work good with 2 players.

Claustrophobia

2 players ONLY Adventurer game

the contents in the base set might be a bit few, but there's also Claustrophobia: De Profundis to fix that

Theres also plenty of online scenarios provided to flesh everything out! Claustrophobia is excellent for 2 players.

Some others:
Space Hulk
Incursion
(Base game comes with cardboard stand ups, no need for minis)
Gears of War: The Board Game
(Works fine with 2 and higher players, but is co-op, meaning you and your other players VS the game)

Some good suggestions so far, but War of the Ring (First Edition) really must be included.

Warhammer: Invasion

and/or

Summoner Wars

Also, Fortress America, soon to be newly released by FFG can play up to 4 but plays very well 2 player, one as the US and the other as all sides of the invasion. Great game, perhaps one that coined the term Ameritrash?

War of the Ring is an amazing 2-player game. Lots of beautiful miniatures and a huge gorgeous board.

Rune Wars is also awesome - though I've only played with 4 players.

The two play very differently, so if you have the money, you should get both!

It's one of my favorites. It looks good. Has good tactical depth. Awesome theme. Lots of expansions, but plays great with just the base game. All the characters need different strategies but no side seems to win more often than the other.

Two words: Defenders of the Realm!

In its essence it's a tower-defense game, but the trashiness that happens all over the place can't be described.

Now, it took us a while to play it right, but once we did? I got the painted miniatures.

This game is superior in every aspect, including its Ameritrashiness!

Fortress America and War of the Ring? I'm not sure the second would cut it, but it's great. Any of the Memoir '44 family is good too.

Space Hulk is fantastic, and Blood Bowl is great, since you just need to make your own figs or standees, make your own board, print up the free rules, and you have an all time classic ready to play.

How about Dust Tactics?

It's a miniature game played on a tiled board (but can also be played as a regular tabletop if you wish).

It has beautiful minis, very interesting theme (space nazis!) but most importantly, imo, is that it plays fast with some very intense fights that does not feel like a total drag (*wink* Warhammer *wink*).

A scenario takes between 30 to 60 minutes.

Also, it plays best with two players.

Beyond just Last Night on Earth, I'd recommend any of the Flying Frog-published titles for two-player thematic games. Conquest of Planet Earth wasn't my favorite game but would be a good option in this case.

Horus Heresy (2010) This is one of my favorite game. It's a big game that have rather streamlined rules and very nice components. There is also a very good backstory to understand the combat. Check it out. It's a 2 player game exclusively, with asymetrical sides.

+ 1. Good with any number, including solo, if you like to laugh while playing.

I know I posted my fav, but really, Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game tastes trashier. Definitely not for players who can't have fun playing a game, but if you're looking for Ameritrash, you're looking for a roller-coaster good time.
