Hello all,

I was hoping maybe some of you could help me out. My game budget has tightened up quite a bit recently, and I can't buy games as freely as I once did. That being said, I was recently looking at a review for Intrigue and noticed it was retailing for around $16 bucks.

I was curious if any of you could suggest games that are perhaps a little older, and not got their due, but are still really good games, but are now a little less expensive. I am looking for a "diamond in the rough" sort of games.

To help narrow it down:
-Like worker placement (but it certainly doesn't have to be)
-Not a big fan of dice (although we do like Kingsburg)
-Like Innovation
-Like Acquire
-Like Agricola
-Like Settlers
-Like Carcassone
-Like 7 Wonders
-Like Bang!
-Like Stone Age
-Like Hive
-Like Ingenious
-Like Go
-Don't like wargames
-Don't like coop games

Any idea is a good idea!

Thanks,

~Brad

My favorite bargains include:

The Bridges of Shangri-La - great little abstract that can be taught in maybe 10 minutes, plays in under an hour, and is incredibly tense.

Chang Cheng - all the same operative qualities as BRIDGES but with a Chinese theme and very devious.

Age of Gods - Like a devious, backstabby version of SMALL WORLD, but with a bit more "meat".

Ad Astra - elements of SETTLERS and PUERTO RICO merged with a strong space/SF theme.

All available here and there for 20$ and under plus shipping.

Santiago can be found at a heavy discount if you poke around.
Same with Mission: Red Planet. Both great games.

Two good games currently on Tanga (www.tanga.com/deals/toys-games) that I would recommend are...

Power Struggle
$10.99 (80% off) + $6.99 shipping

First Train to Nuremberg
$20.99 (61% off) + $6.99 shipping (Also, you get Last Train to Wensleydale on the other side of the game board. So it's like 2 for 1.)

Good Luck!

MISSION: RED PLANET is a favorite of mine, but it's been getting very hard to find since around Xmas 2011 - that's actually the only reason I didn't recommend it.

Did not realize SANTIAGO was that easy to find at discount - very solid game.

The OP may wish to look over:

www.toysforthought.com

www.tanga.com

both of which regularly offer severely discounted games.

Glen More is one of those games that can be purchased around $20 most of the time and like it quite a bit.

Haggis, for around $10 and Rivals for Catan for $15 are two of my favorites. Plenty of great ones out there for cheap!

Heck, I think 1960: The Making of the President for $35 was a bargain. I'd easily have paid 50 for it.

I'll second Power Struggle and add Leonardo da Vinci, another game you should easily be able to find at a very cheap price.

Some good games that turn up quite a bit at thrift stores:

Scotland Yard - very good, but it does have a co-op element if more than two play
Clue: The Great Museum Caper - see Scotland Yard
221B Baker Street: The Master Detective Game - light, fun game of solving a mystery clever clues
Bazaar - some theme, but mostly an abstract
Blokus - abstract, but be sure to count all of the pieces before you buy, the tiny ones are often missing
Twixt - abstract

If you have an i-Phone or the like you can just check BGG from the store if you see a game that looks interesting, but you're not sure about.

I would also second others' recommendations on Leonardo Da Vinci, Chang Cheng and Power Struggle. Be aware that Power Struggle is a bit heavier than the games you listed and really needs 4-5 people.

Based on Settlers, Bang, and 7 Wonders:

Bohnanza
Plays 6, crazy trading card game. Everyone loves this game that I have played with.

This game is 15 bucks on Amazon and free shipping if you combo it with something else to go over 25.

Most of the Z-man games from Tanga are underappreciated. Power Struggle used to be a $70 game and you can tell by looking at the components. Great gameplay. Other games on tanga like Hotel Samoa and Burrows are not bad at all.

Fairy Tale is good and cheap. It's like a quick version of 7 Wonders.

I also enjoy Condottiere.

I don't know if it's out of your price range, but I've played a couple games of Arcana this week, and I'd like to play it some more.

The Battle for Hill 218 seems worthy as well. I've only played it once so far, but it's quick and easy to learn.

Bootleggers and Cleopatra and the Society of Architects are both available for about 20$ and both of them are heavily overproduced games. They're both good, but not great, games that stand out to me for being a good value for your money.

WOW!!!

Loom at all of the suggestions to start reading up on.

BGG Community, once again you have outdone yourselves. I was hoping for 5 or 6 good ideas to look into, but from the looks of it there is about 50 (or more) suggestions here, most of which I have never heard of...can't wait to start researching these!

One in particular kept coming up, and that was Power Struggle, which I have been eyeing for a while now, so that may be the next addition.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN for all of the wonderful recommendations!!!!
