People sometimes ask me: What is the use of the Junkyard module? How can you gain something by just discarding a card?

Junkyard: Structural module, exits up and right. Any turn, you may discard a card from hand as an action. Keeping the trash in the right place.

Well, there is actually a lot to gain...

First and foremost: Since you are normally only allowed to discard 1 card before refilling your hand to 5 for the next year, the Junkyard allows you to get rid of any unwanted cards and therefore draw more cards. Keeping the trash in the right place, if you will.

Second, you can also discard good cards just in order to access more cards and hopefully get events or other useful modules. Since modules are expensive, you usually can't afford more than 2 modules during a year anyway, so free up that space and get some events that are free to play!

Third, Junkyard combos great with card draw from Lab, Library and Education Center. The usual draw-back of drawing cards is that you fill up your hand and thus will not be able to draw so many new cards for the next year. With Junkyard you just discard any excess cards and draw up a fresh hand each year.

Fourth, Junkyard is excellent if you need to stall a bit and see what the others are up to before playing your hand. You could just pass in order to stall, but remember: if everyone passes consecutively, the year ends! By using Junkyard you avoid passing and can thus control the game a little better.

Of course, there are also situations when you don't have much need for the Junkyard's function, but remember: it's a structural(red) module with 2 exits. If you're getting low on exits, this module may be your way out.

And lastly, a red module may come in handy when competing for the red VP. Since the starting Core Module is red too, playing a Junkyard will not only help you ahead in red; it will help your economy too by giving you multiple modules of the same color.

So, don't mistake the Junkyard for trash next time... The Junkyard goes to the station and then the trash can go to the discard pile. cool

SOLAR flare... temp damage everyone..
ALIEN intruder..enters an exterior module...moves at end of a round...kills crew...prevents crew passing through it to do " crew actions "
SPACE DEBRIS...random targets a station & roll to miss or hit...

DETATCHED module..floats off on a cable...

ROBOTOTIC crew member add 1 permanently { may not use yellow or blue crew actions..} not subject to events..

Some fun ideas there.
Funny you should mention Solar Flare, as that card (both name and function (!) has already been 'planned' as a card for a possible expansion. Although I was thinking permanent damage, 1 on each station, including your own. Could be really fun to try to utilize well.
However, we have no plan to release any expansion for Space Station yet.
