From the time I first saw "Flying Leathernecks" as a kid I've wanted to play a game about this subject, and now it is on the horizon - and solitaire to boot!

I'll be patient, but I'm VERY excited!

Like my WWI game, I will have complete pilot rosters (as close as possible) for all the units on the American side. Some examples.

67th FS Capt Dale Brannon
VMSB-232 Lt Col Richard Mangrum
VMF-212 Lt Col Harold "Joe" Bauer 11 kills in 4 missions
Jack Conger 10 Kills
VMF-223 Capt John Smith 20 Kills
VMF-224 Maj Robert Galer
VMF-121 Capt Joe Foss

All the pilots will be rated in three categories - Pilotage (Navigation/Tactics), Gunnery (Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground) and Health. These ratings can fluctuate and will determine a pilots "Aggression" rating and be used to modify combat and other events in the game.

I am very excited too. I usually wait for the last minute to pre-order a game but with this one I believe I shall make an exception.

A great idea for a game! The "hang on by your fingernails" struggle for Guadalcanal begs for a game like this. There have been several games to capture the naval and land warfare aspects of this very balanced campaign, but I am eager to see one that does justice to the aviation aspect.

Thanks Terry -- you picked a very compelling subject. Looking forward to the game!

Mounted boards have not been mentioned as of yet. I don't know what GMT's cutoff is for that but maybe if we get 1000 pre-orders as I have seen in the past. We should be able to post a map mock-up shortly to show a bit of the look we are going for with the map.

I'm playing a lot of RAF these days, and it's a lot of fun, but there seems to be a tiny little something that's missing.

I'm looking forward to this title! (With pretty high expectations, mind you...)

Nice DD

A question about japanese AI.

How do you handle it ? Does the japanese will be able to change altitude, or leave escort to haunt the US flights or last minute change for mission or stuff like that ?

And does the japanese will have dummies as EV or Downtown ?

What ??? You think I m impatient ? humm you're right...

Anyway, I wish you good luck for that wonderfull project.

I think there will a lot of players interested by a solo air warfare game !!!

The Japanese AI for Bombers will be pretty much what they did historically. They didn't really alter altitude based on what they are doing (at least not within the battlespace you are defending). Although your actions as US player can influence what happens - if a enemy Bomber flight is taking alot of losses prior to target then they may abort and run for home - do you stay with them and risk losses when you have accomplished your mission of halting a bomb raid or do you return to "Cactus" to rest your pilots and repair your limited planes.

There are bascially two tracks planned for the game -- a historical track where the missions will be almost 100% what happened historically event driven. The deviation on these missions will be in results. So if 27 Betty Bombers and 17 Zekes attacked Henderson Field around 1115 on 22 Aug 1942 then that is the raid you will face. If 5 Bombers and 3 Zekes were historically shot down - your results may vary depending on what you will do - luck and your tactics will have a hand in this. At the end of the campaign you would compare your VPs to a historical value to see if you did better or worse.

The other track is the ahistorical one where things now happen in a more random then historical fashion. You will have optional rules to allow for more variance in things like altitude and number of attacking planes etc. Card driven so really alot of variation will be available.

There will be some level of dummy counters especially for surface contacts which will add a level of fog of war when searhing for "Cactus Express - Tokyo Express". Aircraft - whether detected or not will depend a great deal on Coastwatcher reporting and/or Radar contacts from "Cactus".

Planned Scenarios or really Campaigns:

2 Day Introductory Scenario - covering initial two days of Invasion. Basically Navy and Army AF assets striking targets and covering Invasion Force.

1st Half Campaign - Aug 15 - Sep 30. (Each around 45 days)
2nd Half Campaign -- Oct 1 - Nov 15
Grand Campaign - Entire Time Period (90 day campaign)

You will be able to game out a couple of days of mini-campaigns but those are just self-generated depending on what you would want to do.

Each Campaign period is driven by a 55 card deck with Events, Raids, Weather etc on them which will drive what is happening. Every card has weather on it which is used for its counterpart campaign -- (Campaign #1 Card #1 has Weather info for Oct 1 1942 Campaign #2. Campaign #2 Card #1 has Weather info for Aug 15 1942 Campaign #1) Each card will have besides Weather info - Raids, Events, Reinforcements on them to drive some but not all of the action for that day.

I've never been much into aviation games (being an old groundpounder), but the description on GMT's site sold me, especially the management of your assets of pilots and planes. Hope this gets released quickly.

P500 it last night with Fields of Fire.

Thanks for your good work.

Thanks Terry for your answers.

Another one ?

What about ground defense, such as AA gun ? Do you have to manage them ?

ANd do you think it is playable as a co-operative game ? I mean, enough meat on the bone for 2 brains ?

I preordered it yesterday. It s growing very very fast. 497 preoders already and something like 20 in few days !!!

Anyway thanks for your games continue on this way !!

Two different types of AAA in game. Land based such as 90mm guns used by marines and ship based. As per previous games in pedigree, AAA is rated light, medium and heavy. Your management of these guns are whether they are active or inactive.

Game is being designed 100 percent solitaire. If I were to design this for 2 player it would significantly alter the design which I have no intention of tackling at this time.

Cooperative. 2 players could easily play co-op. ONe managing airfield operations and fighters for defense and one player running searches and strikes.

I just pre-ordered. I think I was number 587.

I tried to resist, but knew it was futile when my wallet leapt unbidden out of my pocket and the Credit Card popped out.

Oh, and I do NOT want mounted maps. They add only expense.

Who knows, maybe GMT will go for the thick card map I hear they've done for Bloody April 1917. Not quite mounted, but considerably stronger than heavy paper.
