After several lg games have noticed a trend of some players getting locked out of a resource. Went through the cards yesterday and was surprised that there are no brown or grey cards added for the 7th player.

breakdown of resources per player below
3p- Age I-6B & 3G = 9/21 or 43% Age II-4B & 3G = 7/21 - 33% 16/42 - 38%
4p- Age I-3B & 0G = 12/28 or 43% Age II-4B & 0G = 11/28 - 39% 23/56 - 41%
5p- Age I-3B & 0G = 15/35 or 43% Age II-0B & 3G = 14/35 - 40% 29/70 - 41%
6p- Age I-2B & 3G = 20/42 or 48% Age II-0B & 0G = 14/42 - 33% 34/84 - 40%
7p- Age I-0B & 0G = 20/49 or 41% Age II-0B & 0G = 14/49 - 28% 34/98 - 35%

I am planning on adding extended buying to my game from now on to help alleviate the problem that occurs in 7 player games

Good point... Unless all the resource cards are being clumped to one side/section of the table (which still, I have seen on more than one occassion), commercing should make up for much of it.

And being all the green cards chain into 1 or 2 other cards (may not be as practical as raw resources, but it's still something), it still counts as a resource of sorts.

In particular, 7 player adds 2 trading posts, a forum, a tavern, and a bazaar. Now, money doesn't help you if your neighor doesn't have the resource you need, but I've rarely seen players get locked out of a resource when they didn't have the opportunity to pick it up. Usually it's a player realizing 1/3-1/2 way through age II that they need something, and by then yes, it may be too late. The most common mistake players make in large games is not looking at their neighbor's neighbor's resources. If you neighbors can get what they need from elsewhere, you'd better plan on drafting that resource yourself.

Yeah I've had a couple 7 player games where all the clay for instance is all on the other side of the table. I think it adds to the thought process when you decide to pass on a resource you need to achieve a wonder spot and you pass thinking it will come back around.
At a certain point you may have to ammend your strategy and go for buildings or science..
The Leaders expansion does add a couple leaders that give resources.. or any free resources.
I would avoid adding an extra buying phase.. just my opinion

I'll go with the comments that point out the 7 player game requires more thought early on, about how to achieve ones late-game goals.

The game works. Also, remember that in the 7 player game... you'll see zero cards twice. Better draft early what you'll need later than to go for "cheap" military victories or easy prestige points (blue.)

In a seven player game, you will NEVER see ANY card a second time. You might see another instance of the same card, but not that physical piece of cardstock.

Plan ahead, adapt if you have to.
