Had a free afternoon on Monday and so looked for something small and quick - Bitter Victory fits the bill nicely.
Op Husky is the historical scenario and basically requires the Allies to evict the Axis forces from Sicily - the Axis get additional VPs for hexes controlled at the end of the game.
The initial landings went well with only a couple of step losses due to landing disruptions. The Allies got the first activation and captured Syracuse without a fight and did some damgage to the coastal defence forces. The Axis consolidated their forces in front of Catania and the American landings.
The next few turns saw the Axis build up their divisions to form super double strngth stacks but blundered when the US HQ activated last on teurn 3 and first on turn 4 allowing the 2 Armd dive to hook around the Axis lines and cut them all off from Palermo. Two turns unsupplied/isolated trying to break the ring left the Axis forces shattered.
All that was left was for the Allies to mop up the island and finish decisive victors.
Must remember in future that ZOCs require 2+ brigade/regiment equivalents - this is what did for the Axis as the armour raced through gaps in the line.
Great fun afternoon, hope to play something else soon.
