I am thinking of getting involved in couchsurfer. Is it worth it? I would like to hear opinions or story from BGG user that also use that website.

It is this odd people meeting website to organize events or stay with people in other area that share your common interest. You can see it here

It all depends on how interested/comfortable you are in hosting people from other places and/or how often you travel and want to couchsurf while doing so.

If you want to do those activities, the site certainly works well for it. We have used it, as guests and as hosts, and met a variety of interesting travelers from a variety of countries, e.g. Poland, Germany, Russia, France, Belgium, US, etc etc.

It's fun, it's healthy, it's good exercise. The kids will just love it. And we put a little sand inside to make the experience more pleasant.

You know, they say there was a man who jumped from the forty-FIFTH floor? But that's another story...

I am an avid couchsurfer! Highly recommend becoming involved. Not sure what the community in Quebec is like, but it's great in the SF Bay Area.

Just so long as you're not like this guy!

Couch Surfin' by The Reverend Horton Heat

I'm looking around For a place to crash
Something simple that Hasn't already been trashed

If you let me stay here I'll mow your lawn
Since I don't have a job I can party 'til dawn

Quietly here I'll sleep. I won't even make a peep
You won't even know I'm here. Hey, do you got a beer?

Couch surfin'! Couch surfin'! Woo, surfin'! Couch surfin'!

It's okay, 'cause I like the couch
I broke your vase And I cut myself, ouch

What do you mean I gotta leave today?
Well once again, friends, I'm on my way

Slumbering here, I dream. Stayed up for years it seems
As soon as i get a job I won't live like such a slob

Couch surfin'! Couch surfin'! Woo, surfin'! Couch surfin'!

Yeah, surf!

I stubbed my toe On the kitchen sink
I was just gonna go Get me somethin' to drink

My cigarette flew And it couldn't be found
Lucky I didn't burn Your whole house down

Quietly here I'll sleep. I won't even make a peep
You won't even know I'm here. Just letting you know that we're out of beer!

Couch surfin'! Couch surfin'! Woo, surfin'! Couch surfin'!

Yeah! Couch surfin'! Surfin'! I'm couch surfin'!

Can I crash here for a few days?
I'll mow your lawn if you've got a riding lawn mower
I'm gonna grab me another beer, okay?
Thanks a lot, man! I'll pay you back as soon as I get a job!

Couch surfin'! Couch surfin'...

It's a fantastic concept and we've been hosted once which was a great experience. It's essential that you clearly let people know what you can offer and what you expect them to offer be that time, space, effort, social interaction, beer! etc.

I think it's also one of those things that varies by region. I say give it a try, unless you don't like people.

It's not that I don't like them, I just prefer them when they're not around.

I've couchsurfed and been to a few local CS boardgame meetups. I recommend it. The last couple we stayed with were amazing: they went out of their way to be hospitable and we had a great stay with them.

It's good for meeting locals while travelling, so you don't just get the standard tourist perspective on the places you visit. There's also the benefit of getting cheap accommodation, although couchsurfing solely for that reason is against the spirit of the scheme. It works best if everyone completes their profile honestly, so you can better identify people you're more likely to get along with. Give it a go!

Here's another Couch Surfing song, this one by Darren Hanlon:

Well I haven't paid rent for a month or more
I'm couch surfing
And I don't have a key cause I don't have a door
I'm couch surfing
I'm not answering questions
I'm between houses

Of my material possessions I've lost track
I didn't need them
Everything I need fits in my backpack
I call it freedom
A pair of jeans some shirts and a guitar lead
A toothbrush, socks and a paperback reader
All the rest is what's hanging off of me

And I'm not taking calls
I'm between houses

Outside the night is dark and stormy
And you blew up the air mattress for me
We'll talk all night like an open book
And I'll sleep on every breath you took
Before you leave I'll sneak a look up at you

But there's an old saying that could bare retelling
When you're couch surfing:
That 'the guest should leave before the fish starts smelling'
When you're couch surfing

It's romantically existential
To reduce your life to the bare essential
All that which is inconsequential guides me

But this whole theory really depends
On whether or not you've got good friends
And all this weightlessness that philosophers preach
Reduces you to society's leech
But tonight I've landed on my feet
I'm still one friend away from the bum on the street
And I've used up all my good will vouchers
On every single friend with couches
It won't be long before they'll ask me to leave
It's time I cut myself some keys
Give me a pen, I'll sign the lease and go get me a home.

Good to know what to look forward and out for. I was just wondering if they where boardgamers out there that used it. Apparently their are, I shall investigate this thing further then.

I've noticed a few CouchSurfers listing boardgaming amongst their hobbies in their profile. However, I've never had any responses from any that I asked, so I can't say one way or the other if it's a good way to meet other boardgamers. Maybe they were too busy playing games to reply.

It's a fantastic idea... we've hosted many families/couples/singles and never had a bad experience yet. We've met people from all over the world and I'd HIGHLY recommend it just for the opportunity to meet all kinds of interesting people. We've also gotten reciprocal invites to all over the world... Switzerland, Austria etc.

I agree... have a solid idea what you will and won't provide your couchsurfers in terms of food/transportation etc. We basically treated our guests as family members for the nights they stayed with us because they were all exceptionally nice people travelling around NZ and the world.

Plenty of interesting conversations and the chance to meet people from places you'd likely never travel to and getting to spend some time with them asking them about their travels around the world and their own countries is really interesting.

Again I'd highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind meeting new people and spending time with strangers which admittedly is not for everyone.
