Poll: Charity donations and game redesigns/rebuilds - Yea or Nay?
I was thinking about donating my rebuild of Merchant of Venus (artwork by the fantasic Dathkadan) to the Gencon 2012 Charity Auction. As I thought about it, I wondered if it would be...ethical I guess. I mean, I wouldn't think of building something like this and selling it. There's no question in my mind that that would be wrong. So, I thought I'd ask the masses what they thought.
16. Is it okay to DONATE self-built versions of commercially-published games?
Yes. You're not profiting directly.
No. The charity is profiting directly and that's no better.
Unsure
17. Is it okay to SELL self-built versions of commercially-published games?
Sure! You made it!
Nope. It's not really yours to sell.

Donating it or selling it is fine as long as game is not for sale and oop. So you are ok until the reprint of this game comes out this year, this would be my understanding of this situation.

You are donating it to be auctioned aka sold. The fact that a charity profits of this instead of you doesn't matter. That is one sale the game publisher won't be getting. If they want to donate to this charity they can but that's not your choice to make.

You could buy a copy from the publisher and sell that. Alternatively you could ask permission to donate your rebuild. I don't think you can get into trouble, it's just not nice to the people who made the game.

That's my take anyway.
