This might be an odd question, but it's amazing to me how much information we can store in our brains, especially if we are passionate about a subject. So how many rule booklets are in your brain? (not including minor details like starting hand size etc.)

I've got a small collection, but I would need to refresh myself on the rules for Chaos in the Old World since I haven't played it in a while, so that leaves 9 game rules crammed into my skull. How about you seasoned pros?

Around 25, not counting deck-of-cards games. Dexterity games, lighter Euros, and well-loved FFGs.

I'm no "pro" but I guess...

Princes of Florence
Stone Age
Puerto Rico
Dominion
Railways of the World
Troyes
Castles of Burgundy
Le Havre
Agricola
Dominant Species
Forbidden Island
Monopoly
Crokinole
Poker
Settlers of Catan
Hey That's My Fish
Neue Heimat
Alhambra
Chess

And I'm sure a few more but I've gotten bored of thinking about it.

If its one I've played a few times I mostly don't need a refresher except for one thing. Nearly always have to glance again at the amount of cards/tiles/resources/etc to start with in your hand/supply.

very few, maybe 10 or less

I need the rules for the setup instructions. the other day I forgot how many portal cards you put in the center for Ascension, a game I played over a hundred times...

About 250 to 300. About 100 of them, I could also do setup without reference.

Probably not many. I won't count games that I'm good on because I recently played them... one's that I truly know backwards and forwards:

Dungeon Petz
Agricola
Le Havre
Dominion
7 Wonders
Castles of Burgundy
Stone Age
Pandemic
Railyways of the World
TTR
Trajan
Carcassonne
Alien Frontiers
Notre Dame
London
San Juan
Fresco
Thunderstone
Vikings
Lancaster
Lost Cities
Carcassonne Castle
K2
Roll Through the Ages
Space Hulk Death Angel
Hawaii
Peloponnes
Confusion
Fjords
Zombie Dice
Fortuna

Hmm, that was actually more than I thought, though a big part of it is that I've made walkthrough videos for several of them, and that really helps cement the whole thing in my brain

I have over 600 games in my collection, and I would say that over 500 of them I could play without a rules refresher - the other 100 I've only played once or twice so might to check on a few details (or in some cases read the entire book again!). And that's not including other games that I used to own/play regularly. I probably have rule booklets for nearly 600 games in my brain!!!!

Hundreds. I'm allowing myself a quick check in the rules for how many cards, how much money etc. to distribute at the start of the game (though it would still be a three figure number if I'm not allowed even that). I think the reason that's the main thing that doesn't always stick on the memory is that it's information used once, not continually throughout the game.

This idea seems to get tested at least 2-3 times a week since everyone wants to try something I haven't played in a long time.

I would be able to play close to 80% of my ~120 games without a rules refresher. There are a few games I've only played once or twice and forgotten the rules, but most I've played 5+ times and can usually go off of memory.

From my collection? 56 out of 105 in my collection that I could manage without a rulebook, probably about 20 more I could do without a rulebook if I started playing them again regularly.

For me, none. Unless I have played it in the last week. I always make sure to skim the rules, or I will either forget something small and significant, or think I forgot something which is just as bad in my book.

Probably 30-40, as long as looking up a few details as necessary still counts. My gaming group considers it a big plus when we're picking a game to play and everybody playing is familiar enough to not need a rules scan, and we can just set up and get going. Unfortunately, there is almost at least one person who does need a rules scan, so the benefit is rarely realized.

About 10 board games, plus roughly a half dozen card games. Pretty sad, but I only remember general flow of games and always rely on rules for setup info and detailed rules.

Not all of my games, but about all of them. That's my self-inflicted limit on games.

I'm not living as I learn, though; I have several newly bought games or games I got for free that I don't know how to play. But I repeatedly go though the rules of games I know I don't know the rules for. I don't want to have games in my shelf that I don't know what they're about.
