I just realized that this thread should be under varients, not rules so I will repost it there instead.

Sorry

Re: Options for 4-5 Player Games

- Make all the Neutral markers unattainable (or at least most of those in the south)

That is what we usually do, and it gives us a pretty good game, althouhgh still Baratheon has the best position, as it is not contested by anyone in the beginning of the game. If you have players around the board wit different levels of exprience, then it is good to give to the least experienced player to play Baratheons, to level up thigs a little bit.

- Martell not used

Tried this twice but it didn't work. The idea is that Tyrell can pressure on Bartaheon and makes some advance in Dorne. It doesn't work really, because without star orders in the beginning Tyrell is unable to recruit fleet, so Baratheon will be first in Dorne anyway. And when he takes neutral castles in the south, there is really little that others can do to prevent him from winning.

This 4-player variant is meant to be used with the 1st edition board, so the south doesn't have as many castles.

Surely, it doesn't work with the 2nd edition board.

Re: Options for 4-5 Player Games
The big difference between the 1st and 2nd edition boards (aside from ports)is the bottom third of the board. dypaca made a version of the 1st edition board in the style of the 2nd (see my link). You could print off the bottom third of that board and use it as an overlay for 4-5 player games using the 2nd ed board.

Wow! That really changes things. Besides, it sucks that FFG haven't put it as a variant in 2nd edition. With that map, the 4-player game (with Tyrells instead of Greyjoys) looks really well balanced.
