That'd be me!

Great discussion of this game has pulled me into an Andean Abyss pbem game starting soon. Love the rules. Looking forward to future games!

I find it interesting that this game seems to be climbing the pre-order charts faster than Cuba Libre, more interest in Afghanistan I guess?

That's what I thought - however, it's the first week, which is normally the best week I would think. Cuba Libre is up to 439 pre orders and it could have approached that point just as fast.

Cuba Libre - 204 in the month it was announced... 7 more months to get to 411 (the current P500 list number), and at 439 as of the time I typed this today.

A Distant Plain is indeed off to a better start.

Well obviously the lower your number, the better human being you are!

Volko said that he figured the first 40 or so were probably automatic "sign me up for anything in the COIN series as it comes out" preorders from the True Believers.
It's nice to have faith!

This sounds great. I'll make my pre-order soon. At first, I wasn't all that excited when I heard the next volume in this series was going to be Afghanistan, I was hoping for some place different, but after reading about this, it sounds very interesting, especially how the factions seem to play differently than Andean Abyss. Again, I love the fact of a 1-4 player game.

This may sound stupid, but can you comment on the title: A Distant Plain. Why "Plain"? Plain implies flat land and when I think of Afghanistan I think of a very rugged mountain area. (Not that I know much about Afghanistan other than what I watched in the RESTREPO documentary and Junger's WAR book).

Hi Gordon!

Alot of Afghanistan is plains in addition to its mountains (see Joel Toppen's still incomplete Playtest map in the gallery -- the lighter areas inside Afghanistan are plains spaces).

Brian came up with the title and can say more. I like it because it evokes the idea of a distant place that the West does not understand, and because I am fond of the many photos of Coalition troops on a height looking out to a distant plain (see Rodger's banner for the game in the gallery; as well one of the more often used banners for Labyrinth). I guess they're really valleys?

Roger Taylor on ConsimWorld also noted this passage:

When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.

-- Rudyard Kipling, "The Young British Soldier"

From what I have seen of Afghanistan, the pictures remind me of where I used to live: northern Nevada in the I-80 corridor. That's high desert. The "plains" are at 4000" elevation. My house was at 4100". And mountains pop up out of the "plains". I haven't been to Afghanistan.

(Baghdad on the other hand, I can talk about from experience.)

Heck, there is even an Afgnaistan version of Lake Tahoe: Lake Kara!

I love the high desert with it's mountains and valleys. They shoulda sent me to Afghanistan... Oh well.

"A Distant Plain" - I was thinking of many things when the title occurred to me: that a lot of Afghanistan is plain (and plain old desert, too), that it is a distant place not well understood by us, the same mental image Volko evoked of soldiers looking out on distant plains (though technically I suppose many of them are valley bottoms), the grim war movie "Fires on the Plain", and finally a line I read a long time ago in an Edward Lear nonsense poem, "Cold are the Crabs":

...
Yet much remains -- to weave a solemn strain
That lingering sadly -- slowly dies away,
Daily departing with departing day.
A pea green gamut on a distant plain
Where wily walrusses in congress meet--
Such such is life--

Brian

PS: Ryan, I love that high Nevada desert too - my avatar picture was taken out there.

Thanks for the reply Brian. Sounds good to me. I am always curious as to how people think of the title of a game.

I just did a pre-order of this. I have so many games in pre-order status that I figure my wife won't know the difference between 7 or 8 or 9 pre-orders. Or at least lets hope not.

Just placed my order. Another Euro gamer converted to CDGs. In my case via Here I Stand and then Twilight Struggle followed by Labyrinth. Have also ordered Virgin Queen and Andean Abyss so guess I might count as an addict too.

Any news on Bush War? Is this still planned as part of the series?

Brian and Volko you have done a very good job of selling A Distant Plain (and the COIN series generally). Have enjoyed reading the discussions about design decisions etc.

Thanks HMS!

Bush War: Absolutely still planned for the COIN Series. Status is -- in research. I just played another 4-player session of Angola this weekend, and that just got me more excited about the topic.
