Hi from Germany,
here is a session report to illustrate the many options of WK and to provide some impressions about action filled game turns.
Headquarters of the Donnermasters' tribe at the city of Khara.
Chief Gatamos: "Gents, we have been honored with the task to campaign against the Amazons. It is our tribe to perform this task together with the Heavies, 1st Group. We also got a lot of vessels to cross the sea and quickly build bridgeheads helping us to conquer enemy territory. Time is of the essence."
"But why all this hurry and kerfuffle? There are just a few Amazon troops deployed. No real threat to our boys."
"Bloody ignorant! Those Amazons got some allies. There is this damn witch in command of the Undead and a new one ... another shrew! She seems to be capable of commanding hordes of monsters.
"At the moment our spies tell us there are no notable forces yet. But those witches are quick in assembling deadly armies.
"Here is my plan. And don't forget: we must defend our five silver mines."
"Join your units and let's meet again at Coria!"
The dwarves, but also the Amazons advanced and three cities of the Feudals were captured.
"All is going according to plan. Here are the next moves." Gatamos was content.
The next phase of the war witnessed the first sea battle (taking place near the sea port of Arenfel. The Kogs were defeated.
More neutral cities fell to the attackers. The Undead and the Monster armies assembled their first combat units. The dwarves started to build first defenses as attacks from the enemy were sure to come.
The new situation.
This is the actual situation on the game board.
"The enemy seems to concentrate its forces in the area of Zanayan to advance towards Valkorny. Prepare to defend the Elwood.""Note the immense force or Raptors north of the Crimson Bog!"
"The enemy has assembled a strong force here! They will continue to capture territory and cities. We must defend ourselves here.
"Our fleets must carry our advance."
The opposite forces are now in strike distance.
The game board at the end of turn 03.
Gatamos was not amused as he received the recent battle reports.
"We lost a city! Incredible! No enemy shall advance further east anymore!" He dispatched a lot of orders to his units.
This area will soon see a lot of bloody battles.
Gatamos current plan.
Here are turns 05 and 06.
Fighting erupted in Elwood, Lymarn and Roda. Gatamos attacked Zujar with the Dwarf fleet.
He was successful.
Deep in Elwood, the Dwarves managed to repulse an attack of an Undead force. "You see! We can make that witch run!"
Those successes earned the respect - and greed - of some mercenaries.
The Brotherhood offered its services as the monks entered Khara.
Gatamos could have been quite content, but there was this nagging feeling .. a tremendous force of Raptors had assembled west of Olom.
"Those monsters are a real threat to our silver mines."
If the previous campaign phase had seen a lot of fighting, there even were more battles now! A total of 8 brutal fights took place. Twice the Dwarves saw success, but they were beaten back 6 times.
Gatamos had to be careful now not to lose support from his Wizard King.
I use cards to keep score of battles.
Here is the situation at start of the Combat phase of turn 06.
The "crossed swords" markers serve to indicate the battle locations and indicate who is the local attacker. During this turn, the Dwarves attacked at 5 locations, the Undead and Monster forces attacked at the remaining 3 places.
The battles were fought mercilessly, both sides suffered heavy losses. The dwarves assaulted Taghaven from the seaside and managed to keep their position in Elwood.
The first silver mine was destroyed. The city of Tapa became a ghost town as all attackers and defenders were annihilated. The monks demonstrated their kind of enthusiasm ...
Large forces of Amazons and Monsters knocked at the western gate of the Dwarf territory.
Note a new mercenary unit (the blue block represents a squadron of heavy knights).
The brave dwarves in Elwood were now isolated ... no replenishment possible.
"My sole hope now is to strike directly into the Amazon area. Maybe also destroying some of the fortresses of the Monster army."
Neat! This makes me want to play again soon.
What are the little cardboard flag markers?
the counters are used to indicate the locations of Ancient Battlefields. They provide leaders of the Undead army the option to raise more troops.
The markers are turned white side up once one or more Undead blocks were "recruited" there. Only colored side up markers allow to get more Undead troops.
The final part - Turn 07.
In order to avoid playing game turns where the overall situation is hopeless for one faction, I use Political Points (PP) reflecting the assessment of the success or failure of each side. If the given limit is exceeded, the faction in question has lost the game as the necessary support from "off board" no longer exists.
Here is the situation at start of turn 07.
The PP limits for the dwarves is 14, for the Amazons, Undead and Monsters 13. The current scores are 12 (dwarves), 1 (amazons), 0 (undead + monsters). The Dwarves must be careful. On the other hand, the Amazons and their allies will try to fight as many battles (where they have a chance to win) as possible.
At the end of the Movement phase of turn 07, the dwarves triggered 3 battles, the amazons 2 and the Undead/Monsters 3.
Here is a well prepared situation as the large Dwarf force is surrounded by enemies cutting off any retreat routes. If these units would be forced to retreat after a defeat, they would be annihilated.
Therefor: attack is the best defense ...
Note the single pinned Dwarf block. A corps only pins 1 block (it is so slow that more agile units can evade in time.
During the Combat phase, the sequence of battles is randomly determined (by drawing Activation counters showing the next attacker).
The first battle: A small Amazon force tried to retake Taghaven.
The ensuing battle ...
The Polar bears were eliminated, the city was back in the hands of the female warriors.
The second battle was easy. A small Monster force appeared at the crushed walls of Tapa and occupied the city with no resistance.
There was no combat as such, but an attack was still required as this is a genuine Dwarf city always hostile to the Dwarves' enemies. The PP score of the Dwarves was growing.
The third battle ... The Dwarf commander personally supervised this attack.
Note the Water Serpent block ready to strike next turn in case the defenders would suffer a defeat.
The battle ... Note the castle. If this is not eliminated, the attacker has a problem.
The castle did survive.
The attackers must now decide it they simply retreat (they have suffered a defeat) or stay in place and start a siege. This would reduce the castle (=garrison strength) by 1 step but the besieging force would lose 1d6 many steps. Gatamos decided to leave. His fleet had only 7 steps left. The castle would see another day, but the fleet could have been crippled, easy prey for the hungry Water Serpents ...
The 4th battle. A field battle.
The involved forces.
The result. A small victory but it also opened a backdoor for the dwarf unit still in the Elwood menaced by a whole Monster corps. The dragons were killed.
The 5th battle. A fight at the coast.
The forces ...
The result was no surprise.
The Raptors wiped out the poor Mermaids.
Battle number 6. A huge Amazon force stormed the walls of Olom.
The defenders hoped their castle walls would hold and repulse the enemy's avalanche.
In addition to the combat units, the three Amazon leaders applied their skills, and a small group of Stonemages cast a defensive spell turning all enemy A-units into non-effective elements.
The modified combat lines.
The assault was beaten back with losses on both sides. But this time, the attackers decided to start a siege (the hex is marked as a battle and the units involved may not move away. The Dwarf castle was reduced to a one step garrison and the besieging troops lost 5 steps.
The 7th battle. Not really a fight, as a large corps of Raptors only encountered a delaying action by a unit of cunning War Dogs.
They could even escape.
But this was just another defeat for the dwarves. The PP score was too high ...
The 8th and final battle. A dedicated assault force stormed the city of Karakhan.
The battle ...
The mixed defenders were defeated. Few Raptors escaped.
But it was all too late ...
The final PP scores.
The dwarves exceeded their limit by 4 points. The Amazons had 2 PP, the Undead/Monsters a total of 5.
The final situation on the game board (from the Amazon/Undead/Monsters perspective).
I hope all this provided some insights into a great game.
The next scenario will witness the clash of Elven forces against the Orcs. If there is any interest ...
