I think I have failed my children in the area of pop culture references. We don't watch a lot of television or movies and they often are clueless when someone makes a pop culture reference.

You will get blank stares from them if you say, "I see dead people" "we're gonna need a bigger boat" "don't cross streams" and the list could go on...

So I've decided this summer we are going to have a regular movie night crash pop culture course and try to bring my kids up to speed!

I'm going to start with Jaws.

But what's next?

I'm looking for suggestions for movies that have become ingrained in our culture - not necessarily good movies, but ones that get referenced regularly.

+1 for the Sandlot quote. I'd also add Goonies to the list(s).

Exactly. How often do you hear someone under the age of thirty saying things like "Don't cross streams" or "Talk to me, Goose."? These were pop culture for our generation, but most of them won't survive into the next.

So, while I think you'll enrich your kids lives with some classic films, if it's pop culture you want to teach them you better have them watch Twilight, Glee, or the Avengers. That's the kind of stuff that will make up pop culture references when they're our age.

I call bullshit on that (Repo Man). Just because it is old doesn't mean that it still isn't relevant. You can't tell me that "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" wasn't present throughout your life, and that came out in 1939. Sure some movie quotes will fall by the wayside, I doubt anyone will be screaming "Attica! Attica!" anytime soon, but kids born in 2000 are probably spouting "say hello to my little friend" despite that movie coming out 17 years before they were born.

I hear you and mostly agree, except that kids today do know those older movies because they see them on cable over and over. They may not quote that stuff to each other because it isn't fresh and cool, but they know the original source.

Thank you for all the great suggestions, there's a lot here to keep us busy for a long time.

In a similar vein, last night I had the sudden shocking realization that I had never taught my children euchre! I'm from Michigan and my children don't know how to play euchre- it's an abomination!

We played a game last night, my son thinks it's boring, my daughter and I trounced TomA and my son 10 to 2.

Just imagine, people, I almost sent my daughter to college without know how to play euchre!
