Here we go again, guys! First it was Hairbrained Schemes LLC with their Shadowrun Returns kickstarter and now we have a new kickstarter from Cliffhanger Productions for another new Shadworun game.

This time it's Shadowrun Online. A browser and tablet-based Shadowrun MMO set in the 2070 (4th edition) timeline. They've already been in development for a while and it seems that they need a bit more funds to get the game out the door. Check it out here:

Turn based...
Browser based...

I much would have preferred a client/server based system on par with the other MMOs of the world like WoW and their ilk.

For me, it all comes down to the gameplay. Yes, it's browser-based, but you'll be able to run it in full-screen mode. The whole server-client structure takes a lot of overhead to build. Why not leverage the one that already exists built-in through IP?

I also don't mind the fact that it's turn-based. In fact, I prefer it because that means that it will be closer to the experience of a Shadowrun RPG session.

They posted a couple of screenshots on the kickstarter:

So if you're worried about the fact that it's a browser-based game this will hopefully ease those concerns. They are using the Unity engine which is kind of like Flash except more robust, more responsive, and 3D. They have more screenshots on their website for those interested.

As a note, they released an update:

You can get the game in 2 ways:
1) F2P, Microtransactions, Browser Based

2) Campaign Mode, One Price, no Microtransactions, Stand alone

And the two don't mix.

Well, now I'm not sure what to do. I like the concept but I'm a bit concerned that this is going to splinter the community. Now I have to talk to my friends and we have to agree as a group on which one to get. I guess that it'll probably be free-to-play until we potentially get to a point where we would want to buy in.

This sounds like a hella bad idea.

Could be, but we'll find out.

I'm in for the F2P, Microtransaction and browser based one.

I would much prefer Shadow Era's finance model, but alas, it is not to be.

However, even though it is a MMO in sorts, it isn't a persistent world like Eve Online, so having people be able to decide how they want to play it doesn't bother me.
