I have played 41 of these top 100 abstract games (and 15 of the top 20), but only own 30 of them.

It's interesting to note that at least 9 of them are games that can be played with a standard deck of cards or a chess board, or are print-and-play.

To pull up the list of the top 100 abstract games:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/abstracts/browse/boardgame

Inspired by the wargames and thematic games forums...

71 so not too bad, I didn't think it would be that many although Ubongo and Blokus and all their derivatives probably account for 10 of them

What a bizarre list that is - I would never classify half of those games as "abstract".

In any event, I've played 67 of them.

Take Kahuna for example. It's classified as Abstract Strategy, Card Game, and Mythology (!).

So things can be in multiple categories. Not sure who decides, but yeah, some of them are quite suspect.

11 of the Top 20.
41 of the Top 100.

Be sure to vote on game pages for the category. If enough people vote up AbStrat games as Abstract and vote up the others as Family, Strategy, etc. as appropriate, eventually we won't have this issue anymore . . .

Yeah, that was a big hurdle for me as well. It looks pretty juvenile.

Wow, either I don't play many Abstract games or I just don't play many that are in the top 100. 2 of them, Chess and Mahjong. Gee, I don't feel too good about that.

...whoa

It's a start.
Actually, I checked back through the list, and found I knew a couple under different names (Auf Heller und Pfennig, My Word). 88

For reference, I haven't played the following (yet):

Ingenious: Travel Edition
Ubongo 3D
Ubongo: Duel
Ubongo
Ubongo Extreme
Blockers!
Fealty
Micropul
Homeworlds
Volcano
Deduce or Die
Blox

I've played 55 of the top 100.
I've played 16 of the top 20.

We need a Card Game area I don't really think they necessarily live in Family Games.

I'd definitely suggest playing Deduce or Die at some point - it's easily played with a standard deck of cards. And I think you might enjoy it...

Of the Ubongo games, I'd recommend 3D, but honestly none of them has struck home with me enough to pick up; that one has just come closest.
