So, we just played our first 5-player game (on Hard difficulty) and barely won.

We did have a strange situation almost come up, and we were curious how it is supposed to be resolved.

This is near the end of the game (turn 8). The only remaining Campaign stages are Mount Doom and The Final Stand. We had some difficulty with the Gondor Campaign, where we had killed some stuff (and heroes) but hadn't completed the stage. Then, quest cards had repopulated (to an extent) the stage again. Anyway, this resulted in our group killing a majority of the heroes with the Gondor symbol (and the majority of the heroes in the Hero Deck overal).

So esssentially, we had a couple of times where we tried a stage and knocked it down to 1 or 2 heroes (killing 1 or 2 heroes) but failed the stage. Then, a quest card would add more free people armies and hero(es) back to the stage.

When it came down to it, we ended up not having enough hero cards with Gondor icons to have a card for each hero cube.
a) are we forced to play our face-up hero cards? (ie we went through the hero pool deck and there were no remaining gondor heroes, and still needed hero cards to match cubes)
b) Even with using face-up hero cards, we did not have enough cards to match cubes. Do we just ignore placing additional cards? Do we remove white cubes if there aren't enough cards?

It's covered in the rules, page 9 the last paragraph in the left-hand column: They're "lesser" heroes with Damage 2, Health 2, Valor 0, worth 1vp and 2 favor if killed and are considered the lowest rank.

Early in play testing there were no generic hero cards; the above is how things were handled beyond named heroes that were added to the battle.

Aha, thanks! Not sure how we missed that.

It was a fun game, fighting The Final Stand facing Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn, and Faramir (our last Gondor heroes, excepting Gandalf) vs 5 Nazgul.

It came down to the final Nazgul vs Aragorn, needing 6 hp on 3 cubes. Failure would have seen quests add 2 more heroes and 8 more Free Peoples, plus forced us to do the Final Stand again (against both Aragorn and Gandalf) plus needing to complete Mt.Doom, on the last turn of the game. Very nail-biting. We love this game.
