The end of the Quest mentions sometimes (often a xp for the players) a reward and then step 3 of the campaign phase mentions a xp for each.
These are seperate awards aren't they?
So it seems the players will outrun the overlord XP wise. I guess the game is designed that way.

No, they are not separate. The campaign phase is describing the XP the players receive from the quest.
Usually the OL should outrun the heroes in XP, as that is usually the only reward he gets (whereas the heroes can receive gold).
In every quest all Players including the OL get 1XP.
The winner gets some bonus depending on quest:
Act 1: Relic or gold
Act 2: relic, gold, or 1 bonus XP
Act 1: relic or 1 bonus XP
Act 2: relic, 1 bonus XP and an extra open group in future quests, or 2 bonus XP.
The heroes should end with 8-11 XP, but probably more like 9 (there are only 4 of 10 act 2 quests that give bonus XP to heroes).
The OL should end with 8-16 XP, but probably more like 10-12 depending on quests chosen and how many they win.
To get to 16 the OL would need to win:
A fat goblin
The Frozen Spire
The twin Idols
The Wyrm Turns
Death on the Wing
The interlude doesn't matter.
