I really like playing games like this with my girlfriend, but unfortunately she is very arachnophobic, and the fantasy setting tends to be rife with giant spiders. The little plastic spiders genuinely unsettle her, so I'm trying to think of a thematically appropriate proxy to use.

I've been trying to think of an animal or mythical creature that uses poison, and has some feature that would make it difficult to get away from (like the spider's web), but that wouldn't seem too silly being somewhat common in this setting.

I've thought about some viney sentient plant, or a Cthulhu-like tentacle creature, but those both seem out of place. Some sort of snake/lizard creature like a naga or basilisk could work, but I'm not sure that I would feel like the ability wrap the hero up would warrant always having to spend Fatigue to get away. I could go cheesy and just make it some magic gravity field generating creature, but eh...

Any ideas would be appreciated!

IF you own the conversion kit an any of the 1sd ED boxes,
Just substitute out a weak monster type for the spiders.

OR you could simply replace any spider entries with the goblin or Zombie miniatures.

Making the game more appealing to your partner is more important in this case than preserving the stats and appearance of the spider figure.

Dire Porcupine - Created by the overlord to harass heroes.
Using magic to breed them larger and smarter and give them a poisonous bite.

The quill throwing ability explains the need to be careful around them.

Kinda silly but we're talking about replacing 3 foot tall spiders.

Simple solution is to just put the spider minis and cards in an opaque bag and play without them.

You'll have to play "A Fat Goblin," "Castle Daerion," and "Cardinal's Plight" for your 3 Act I quests. Only 1 Act II quest requires spiders.

Find some little spiderman figures. Then they can still be spiders but not look like them.

I would recommend using real spiders to uh... desensitize her. The hard part would be keeping them on the board, but I'm sure she can help with that.

Please post video.

You'd probably have to glue the spiders to empty bases. They'll squirm delightfully during play, and as a bonus, the girlfriend can be entrusted to feeding them flies between encounters.

In no time at all, she'll be begging you to bring out your plastic spiders again!

My wife HATES the Descent spiders. The smaller 2E ones worse than 1E ones even. So I just asked her what she would do and she suggested "Paint them pink and put little bows on them"

So there you have it.

I can suggest you only one thing.

Slime. Green, poisonous slime with pool around him.

And the only thing it will conflict with is the Wilderness trait.

They're white, aren't they? Cut off head and legs and make little terrible snowmen out of them. Or cut off two legs, move two other legs to the back and change them into cave beetles.

Fuzzy Pink Kittens, with cuteness posion that sucks your life away with neediness, and you can't walk by them without being slowed by their generous fluff because you have allergies. Except if you roll a 1 or 2, because then you take Zyrtec, which makes you less allergic and slightly sleepy with makes you ambivolent to their cuteness.

I didn't expect to get so many replies, but I suppose it is an easy topic to poke at.

I really don't want to have even fewer monster options, so not using them is right out. Interestingly, my big phobia is snakes, but I think I could handle some snake minis.

Some kind of ent or saproling is what I wanted to find, with tangly vines and limbs, but I can't find any good treepeople minis in the right scale.

For plants, check these out. Probably a bit too large and expensive for what you need though. But if you look around there are a few other minis manufacturers what do plant monsters of various types.
