What games would you choose? This is not the same as listing your ten favorite games. You might love heavy euros, but if you could only own ten games total you would probably want to sprinkle in a bit of diversity.

No cheating, no using certain games to play other games with the same components. Games played with standard decks of cards don't count.

Oh man... This is rough... In no particular order:

~Letters From Whitechapel
~Axis & Allies Anniversary Ed (nostalgia)
~Cyclades
~Lost Cities (for family play)
~D&D: Wrath of Ashardalon
~Eclipse
~LOTR: The Card Game (I guess I could live with just the base set)
~Sid Meyer's Civilization (new FFG version)
~War of the Ring
~Aye Dark Overlord (for drunken fun)

I know - not a very diversified list, but my gamer friends and I are fairly monochromatic with our preferred games.

Perhaps i am missing a good Ameritrash, but i haven'Ät played any yet. On this list are some games i haven't played either, but they would add some mechanics.

PS: If i had played Eclipse, it might be that i include it and kick sth else. TS and Brass would stay for sure.

Cyclades is a good gateway Ameritrash (arguably in the no-man's land between). It has auction systems granting straight forward options while still maintaining deep strategic elements. On the other side, it also has lavish game components, great miniatures, dice rolling, and area domination.

Give it a try!

I almost did this a couple of years ago. This is about my list:

Go
Amun-Re
Combat Commander: Europe

...my three favorite games.

Ancient Battles Deluxe
Landships!

...two more "toy box" wargames, where you can put together umpteen scenarios with a common set of pieces. Rather than one box, one battle games. Sometimes when I was making my rules I had expansions not count, in which case I'd go with C&C Ancients and/or Memoir 44 instead of either or both of those.

Samurai
El Grande
Bamboleo

Three different looks from Euros. (Or their ilk, if you have a narrower definition of Euro.)

Breakout: Normandy
Blue vs. Gray

Two more favorite wargames.

Trying to spread things around, in terms of game styles; I have a fair number of highly-rated games not included.

1. 1830 (my all time favorite game)
2. Settlers of Catan (a classic in our family)
3. Puerto Rico (outstanding game play)
4. Junta (love the way this works!)
5. Endeavor (Really nice balance, easy to learn)
6. Age of Steam (my favorite Wallace)
7. Sentinels of the Universe (for a team game)
8. Pathfinder Rules Set (love role-playing)
9. Twixt (my throw-back, though AH's Gettysburg was close)
10. Acquire (My second throw back. Enjoy this a lot)

The main thing I'm missing is a really strong gateway game...

Isn't Settlers considered one of the best gateway games? My group actually skipped it, but I have seen a ton of recommendations for it as a gateway on these forums.

I'm assuming that expansions don't count against the 10 because they drive my decision-making a bit. And since I can only have 10, a big question each selection needs to answer well is "Will it get played?" So, some of favorites didn't make the list for that reason, and I had to diversify genres/themes a bit to avoid a "sameness" in the small collection allowed. Overall, my list favors lighter games that can accomodate friends and family, with player numbers ranging from 2 (for the wife and me) all the way up to 6+ for those larger groups.

Memoir'44 - I just love this one, even if the wife practically refuses to play. I'd be willing to hold onto it just to play solo and for when my son is ready to play.

Dominion - A great deck-building game with astounding replayability when you add in the expansions. I personally enjoy it with any number of players.

Stone Age - A great worker placement game that's accessible and enjoyable. The wife loves it, and we'll play 2-player or with friends.

Settlers of Catan - A classic, and a solid gateway game to boot. Not my favorite anymore, but still good enough to warrant the occasional play. I'll even play up to 6.

Zooloretto - A good theme, family friendly, another good gateway game, and plays well with 2-5.

Alhambra - A great tile-laying game, especially with the expansions.

Loot - A nice, quick, enjoyable card game that works well for individual play or team play.

Say Anything - Our go-to party game, works great with bigger groups, especially those not big into games.

7 Wonders - It suffers a bit due to lack of interest from friends/family, but I really enjoy it, and it works well with up to 7. Party games aside, it's quite rare to play a "real" game with that many people.

Dixit Odyssey - One of my wife's favorites. I'll throw her a bone here and include it. It's just okay in my books, but I don't mind playing it. It's a good game for creative types who aren't into calculating the optimal move. Accomodating up to 12(!) is a bonus.

Definite 5:
Battletech
Arkham Horror
Battlestar Galactica
Memoir '44
Dominion

For the second 5, I'm having a hard time deciding.
Alien Frontiers (This one may just be cult of the new)
Carcassonne (I almost placed Ticket to Ride here)
Ghost Stories
Neuroshima Hex!
Race for the Galaxy

Honestly, if I was stuck with only 5, the definite five would keep me happy if need be.

Cosmic Encounter

I have a few that are nearly in this list, but I think this covers most of the ones I love

Crokinole would belong on here except that I don't consider it a "board game" (mostly because then I'd have to remove one of these to make room!)

It's an interesting question. I decided to think about which itches I would need scratched by which games

family - Flash Point: Fire Rescue
economic/train - Bullfrog Goldfield
gangster/AT - Blood Feud in New York
solitaire - Smokejumpers
racing - Speed Circuit
wargame tactical squad - Band of Brothers: Screaming Eagles
wargame strategic - EuroFront II
wargame carriers - Flat Top
wargame naval - Great War at Sea / Second World War at Sea: Cone of Fire
wargame minatures - Force on Force

and some other itches I'd guess I'd just have to live with
RISK replacement - Dust
wargame simple - Memoir '44
wargame tactical platoon - Panzer Grenadier: Afrika Korps
wargame solitaire - Where There Is Discord: War in the South Atlantic

and if you were sending me off to a desert island I'd want to pack along 1830: Railways & Robber Barons and see if I could ever get the hang of strategy on this game...

All of my expansions are in the boxes of the base games, so I'll be sneaking them in.

1. Power Grid (w/ Robots)
2. 7 Wonders (w/ Leaders)
3. Stone Age (w/ Expansion)
4. The Resistance
5. Puerto Rico
6. Alien Frontiers (w/ Factions)
7. Cyclades (w/ Hades)
8. The Princes of Florence
9. Settlers (Not my favorite, but it'd hard to not have it as a hook for new players)
10. Chaos in the Old World (Just beat out Middle Earth Quest)

This doesn't leave me with much in the way of a good quick 2P game. I'll be getting Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small soon, so that could bump something... Settlers maybe.

Made important due to it's influence based on when it came out versus how good it is. Yes, it's a still a good game, but it wouldn't be what it is if it had come out now. Neither would the gaming industry, but that's beside the point. If a group has moved past the gateway point, there's little reason to go out and get it. Play it if somebody happens to have it, but that's as far as I would go.

On topic, I know I had my list at 4 when somebody was asking for a top 5. I would have to rethink to get it to 10.

That's a deliberate attempt at circumventing the rules. Your penalty is that you lose five games and now you are forced to only own five. devil

I'd also stash another 10 or so games in a backpack somewhere, hoping they'd go unnoticed.
