regarding small meteors and lasers

when a small meteor hits a laser from the side (laser pointing forward, meteor coming in from the side) , does it just bounce off? because the laser has a smooth side ?
or does it destroy the laser if you don't power up a corresponding shield?

sort of same question, a small meteor coming at you from the front. You have a dual laser pointed at it, (not a single shot), does it just bounce off and you don't need to fire, or do you need to spend a battery and shoot it to avoid damage?

Small meteors only do damage to pipes that are exposed. Unless the laser has an exposed pipe pointing towards the small meteor, there is no damage.
