Arson of churches and monasteries was common during the first days of the Republic. Militias were created in order to preserve the artistic and cultural heritage of Spain from primal anti-clerical outbursts. Their mission was to protect churches, museums and librairies. Here a militia man poses for the photographer in front of an already ransacked church:

This sort of thing was subsumed in the "Reds Rape Nuns" or Aerial Atrocity" random event 31-33. No denying it happened, though its effect on the course of the war was not great - hence a minor change in PSL for one side or the other.

Sorry but what the image shows is the communist militia with their "trophies" after looting a church (notice the smiles, the raised left arm and the clenched fist). No militia was ever created with the purpose you mention. The then president of the Republic notoriously said that "the life of a republican is worth more than all the churches in Spain".

I think he might have been referring to the Carlists, and the Falangists who were most ardently Catholic - no lack of those on the Rebel side.
Just a bad choice of photo, I can't ever recall seeing one of militia ardently defending a church.
