I played the Miskatonic School for Girls card game a while back and decided I wanted to get into the Call of Cathulu games so bought Arkham horror.

I played it through by myself with one investigator (doctor) and I got a few things wrong but I finished by sealing 4 portals (I got a handy 'find gate' spell at the beginning) and fought Yig right down until he had only 2 Points left (as I said I may have been slightly wrong so may have done better than I should have!) and now I need to know what next?

I would like to by an expansion but which one first? Are things such as the dice and painted figures really worth the money? I like the look of the Miskatonic expansion but this doesn't seem to be the first one.

Where do I start!

There are plenty of threads and opinions about this very question. It may be the most asked question in the AH world, so you're in for a lot of fun reading on these boards.

One tip though, as a solo player you may find that playing with 4 investigators really helps you enjoy the game a bit more. There are a lot of opinions on this point as well, but 4 seems to be the sweet spot.

Enjoy and keep reading!

PS... My recommendation for the first expansion to buy is Innsmouth Horror.

Start by playing the game to death!
Why focus on expansions so early? The base game has a ton of replay value. If you fight each Old one once you have a while to play...and if you want to beat every Old one once...plenty of great playtime with just the base game!
My tip is to play at least with 3 investigators solo. 4 is even better, but there is a lot to keep track of!
Another tip is to avoid the strategy forum here!!! Find you own strategies before you read those forums. Much more fun to experience the game itsel, than just read whats good and whats bad!

So why are you lurking here on BGG? Go and play. And if you fought each Great Old One once we can talk about expanions....

We'll I'll throw in my two bits. I would start with Dunwich first for the board expansions, and King in Yellow for the non-board expansions. If you're mainly playing solo games the board expansions might be a little rough right off the bat, they work better with multiple investigators. Innsmouth is probably the best of the board expansions but really increases the difficulty of the game. I'd suggest holding off on that one until you get a few more games under your belt and familiar with the strategy and tactics of the base game. Dunwich adds new elements but are more manageable for newer players.

King in Yellow is a really good thematic expansion. The Acts add a good dose of tension and a press-your-luck element to the game which I enjoy. It was also the expansion to first introduce the optional Hearlds, which add even more variety and difficulty to the game.

The Miskatonic Horror expansion is essentially an expansion for the expansions, so you're really not going to get any value from it unless you already have a few of the expansions.

Thanks all for the help!

Should have said I may play it with others at some point when we have time at the club I go to or if I have friends round.

I shall get playing again as soon as I can with a few more investigators. I really only used one to see how to play.

When you the ow in the new investigators AOs, items, skills etc, you can't go wrong.

Keep playing just the base game until you beat it consistently, and have the rules down cold. Then start looking at expansions. Take your time; this has tremendous replay value, even without expansions.
